Retrofitting Autodim Mirrors

Just to share my exprience.

My E46 didn't come factory pre-wired for the Electrochromatic rear view mirrors. I figured it was a nice mod to do - no more worries with super bright headlights or fog lights from the car behind.

PML said the wiring needs to be factory fitted. I contacted the more regular workshops but they didn't want to install it. Reasons cited were 1) They don't carry the wiring harness, 2) Its a damn complicated job 3) Never done & don't know how.

Thanks to a fellow forummer, Mark, he hooked me up with LD Auto Supply. I believe many old timer forummers go there for their ICE installations. With a wiring diagram from E46Fanatics.com, they started work with the installation.

The autodim mirrors come with a 10 pin connector - for the autodim function, clown nose & rain sensor.
Specifically for the Autodim to work, only 3 wires needed to be hooked up :
- Pin 1 +12V Only when in reverse
- Pin 3 +12V Ignition source
- Pin 10 Ground

A wire from the reverse light at the rear seat area was routed to Pin 1. This is needed so that the autodim function is disabled when the car is put in reverse.
Note that for Pin 3, it needs to be from an ignition source (not constant 12V). This is to ensure that the auto dim is turned on only when the engine is on, else battery will drain non stop.
Auto dim function worked 1st time i turned on the engine.

I installed electric rear blinds at the same time.
For both installations, workmanship is top notch, a highly recommended place if you need to do ICE installations or similar types of accessories.

Re: Retrofitting Autodim Mirrors

Excellent write-up. Thanks.

I had thought that the wiring harness was through the A-pillar, to the LKM (light control module). Didn't know about the reverse pin.

Re: Retrofitting Autodim Mirrors

Nighthawk, you bought your blinds from mark? good deal.

I go LD Auto for my ICE, didn't know their kung fu so good, can retrofit autodim mirrors and rear blinds. solid. They carry stuff like DLS, dynaaudio, phoenix gold from the basics to the competion and reference series.

Re: Retrofitting Autodim Mirrors

Yep, got the electric blinds from Mark. Very happy with them.

Apparently PML does not carry the electric blinds nowadays. They said it needs to be factory fitted.

Re: Retrofitting Autodim Mirrors

Hi bro, its a very nice write up.. :)

Did you link the rain sensor as well? I was thinking of hooking it up if it could work..

What's a clown nose btw? light sensor?:lol2:

Re: Retrofitting Autodim Mirrors

The clown nose is the red thing at the bottom of the mirror. Its mostly used with the BMW alarm. I believe it lights up momentarily when the alarm is activated.

There are 2 light sensors. One on the front of the mirror facing the front of the car to sense the 'ambient' light. Another on the mirror itself to sense the light coming from the rear of the car. It makes the comparison & decides how much to dim.

Nope. I didn't have the rain sensor, else i'd have installed that as well. For this, you need to do some coding.

Re: Retrofitting Autodim Mirrors

Cool!! Nice mod to do! Would u be able to give a rough price estimate? PM if sensitive!

Cheers!

Hmm..... this blind sounds familiar....

Re: Retrofitting Autodim Mirrors

nice, so is your clown nose blinking when you lock your car? i saw a car silver 3er at wheellock place carpark with the same mirror and the clown nose was blinking which might suggest he had the alarm feature too.

btw, where did you buy the mirror? mail order? any ideas if they have the driver side mirror as well?

Re: Retrofitting Autodim Mirrors

My previous car in Canada has the clown nose. After I locked the door it would flash. I had the BMW OEM alarm installed

Re: Retrofitting Autodim Mirrors

No secret. I got the mirrors 2nd hand from a fellow forummer. Met him at 1.45am - what a night! I've no idea how much a new one would cost. Anyone knows?

I'm not aware of side mirrors with auto dim as well if so, it would be neat. Wiring is quite straight forward.

The pin for the clown nose is Pin 9 LED kathode (-) This is the clown nose LED.
I didn't wire this up but I guess its quite easy to link this up to the relay that is triggered when the door is locked for it to blink even without the OEM alarm. Personally, no need lah.

Re: Retrofitting Autodim Mirrors

Thanks for the reply bro, very nice work.. after market mirrors with dimming costs about 200-300 bucks.

Of course, it comes with other fanciful stuff like digital compass and additional map lamps... hahaha who needs so many maps

Re: Retrofitting Autodim Mirrors

Nighthawk, i know there's part without the clown nose... personally i'm not a fan of the clown nose... i'm still looking for the side mirror ...
