Removing E39 MID

I never did it myself... but i saw the pml tech do it while he was adjusting the trim-flap that opens and closes. seems easy enough. if you cannot take it out, maybe drive to one of our usual ice shops and ask them to take it out for ya. dun think they will charge. like 10 secs of work, most likely will do it for you out of goodwill.

why do you want to remove it?
Ai marine fish man, who u asking the ques ah? I ain't removing anything but wondering wat MID is. I oni know Mindef's vehicle no plate all got MID.

Sorry, been away for a few days.

Yes, the MID is the pic shown above.

I wanted to remove it to thread the cassette adapter wire from the cassette deck down to the cupholder so that it is neat when I plug in my iPod.

I found the way to do it. In case anyone is interested.

When you pull out the volume knob and look in the opening, there is a tiny little torx screw at six o'clock position, use a torx screw driver to turn anti-clock wise for about 45 degree, you will hear the MID panel unclicked, use a small screw driver to push the whole front panel out.

The thing is, once you find out how it is done, it is actually very easy. I can do it in a few seconds now :)

Cheers !

hey KT, can you take some pics? I am definitely interested.

My objective is to hook up the iPod to play through the cassette deck and to have Belkin charger ( Belkin ) hidden away. So the install must be as neat as possible.

I use fuse 43 (Telephone) in fusebox in gloove compartment. This allows me to have power on ignition.

To tap the power, I use a fuse connector (or Albert of Tye called it PigTail). It looks like this:

I then run a wire from the gloove compartment to the centre console area to provide the necessary power for my Belkin charger. After connecting up all the necessary ends, I wrap some rubber sheet to avoid any potential rattles when the charger is hidden away behind the aircon unit.

When all is done, I would have 2 wires coming out from the cupholder. One is the cassette adapter mini-plug and the other is the connector from Belkin. Hook both these to iPod dock and placed it in front of the aircon unit ..

Done !!

All you can see is a white wire coming out fom the cupholder. The mini-plug is plugged into the line-out socket and the SQ is acceptable, much better than using Dension's IceLink in my other car before this.

Hope this helps.

KT, what a cool mod! Need to see it in real life to fully appreciate it. I bought the pocket dock to do some experiment but realised that I need to buy the older iPod car charger with the firewire connector. The other alternative is to make sure the iPod is fully charged at home when i take it out but that is quite a hassle bcoz the iPod actually never leaves my car unless i am downloading music. The original dock is a bit bulky and my concern is that it may move during hard braking. I see that you are using an anti-skid rubber mat. Would it be better to double-side tape the dock? The last time I use the anti-slip mat, it left some permanent marks on the plastic. Are you coming to the usual month-end meet-up? If not, then perhaps we can meet and you can tell me more. I think Racebred would be interested too!

gabey, the other option is for you to velcro your iPod. I did that for my E46 318 and it works well. I prefer the dock because it is easier to hook up, plus my daughter could also take the iPod to the rear seat, select the song she wanted to listen to and all I do is just dock it back in and play.

I have missed many meet-up mainly because of timing .. Sunday evening is not the best of time for me.

We could arrange a time for me to show you how mine is wired up, always more than happy to share (PM me, I work rather late and is office bound, so .. timing may be an issue) .. iPod is one of those toy I bought that I still use it everyday, very happy with it.

:)

gab, you're right, i'm interested

KT is definitely the "king-modder-of-DIY-ICE-shit-and-other-stuff".

but i cant possibly do this myself. i look at all the wires, confuse immediately. i need help.... HELP!!

KT, roger sir! Will PM you and arrange a time and place. Thanks alot. Will keep Racebred posted also.
