Rattling sound from rear seats

Hi,

Was wondering if anyone ever had a rattling sound coming from their rear seats? Rattling sound only comes when the car is driving over humps or uneven roads.

The sound seems to originate from the rear centre armrest area, and it sounds like a screw is loose.

Have removed the rear seats and tested seat belts to try to pinpoint sound, but all to no avail.

Thanks.

Hi Yuin

Long time no see.... hehe. Glad to see you post again.

Could it be the rear armrest bolting is loose? or maybe there is a screw in the armrest compartment?

Sometimes it could be the rear speaker board area.

Also it could be the rear seat bottom two catches. Its not properly secured.

Cheers!

I remembered I had that rattling sounds before. Realised that I had folded down my rear seats before and forgot to push them back in place till I hear a click where the catch locks the rear seats. The sound drove me crazy till I had someone sit at the back and "accidently" pushed the seats back in their places!

Problem solved!

Re: Rattling sound from rear seats

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. Funny thing is that the sound started a few days back and I had never removed the rear seats before that. I'll check again though. After much trial and error, I know the noise is nothing to do with any part of the armrest.

Also, the sound seems to originate from the crack between the rear seat and rear backrest. When I put down the armrest, the sound is louder.

Sound is just driving me crazy, but I don't want to dismantle the whole rear - just too much trouble.

Cheers.

i've had many kinds of sounds coming from all around my black car. squeaking, rattling, even "tock tock" noises. i've sent it in many times for checking, but there are still sounds. it's not that i'm fussy, but when the car is so quiet, you tend to notice these noises. haha.. just live with it la.

Yuin,

Did u try narrowing down where the sound is coming from by having a passenger seat in the rear as u drive?

Re: Rattling sound from rear seats

I see tt you're driving a E39. My Ex E46 had this rear seat area problem also. Happened to be the vents at the rear panels ( where Speaker board and the rear windscreen meets) causing the squeaks and creaks. Nudge it a little, harder and very hard...sound disappeared.

Re: Rattling sound from rear seats

As Eric mentioned, the sound was in my previous ride, an E38. Eventually, I found out that the sound was coming from the undercarriage, where a cable had come loose from its rubber holder and was knocking against the undercarriage. Problem was solved in 2 mins, but pinpointing the noise took almost 2 hours + lots of sweat.

Anyway, my current ride is quiet as can be.

Cheers.
