Question about idling rpm.

What would be the normal idling rpm for an E46 320i? If its higher or lower then normal what does it mean?

Assuming it's not a cold start
Then it should be in the range of 600-700rpm

If RPM is higher, quite likely you'll need to have your engine checked. If its lower, get your tachometer checked. Most engine dies when lower than 600 rpm, or at least your car will behave like an oversized vibrator.

What is the RPM you have on oyur car? 320i E46 has a drive by wire throttle control i.e it is not connect mechanically to your throttle body intake. normal RPM is 600, a variation, if not at cold start, could mean too many things including the MAF, position sensor or even a dirty fuel line! a simple diagnostic should highlight a major problem if any.
