Funny that govt brings up flight risk. The romanian ambassador who is rich, powerful and who think he is god's gift (look at the hot women he hangs out with) was never considered a flight risk! Why? Because he is rich, influential and held a position of high authority, so he must has the integrity and dignity of not absconding from the country. Guess what? He did and he ran fast and he lied about the reasons of why he left and why he would not return.
So why would the 4 ang mohs be considered as flight risk at all?They could pay, they held good jobs so they would run abscond right? They will stay behind and hear the trial right? Wrong again! They were the first to escape if there is any chance to face the music.
In my opinion, those who are deemed to have flight risks must be those rich and influential FTs who had commited crimes. Not some poor souls or local hawkers who committed murder. The govt is not doing enough to impound foreigners' passports when shyte happens. PERIOD! They are only good at catching the pink ICs or red passports from leaving the country. Freaking double standards if you ask me.
Recall the incident where the ex-chief of IMF, Mr DSK was captured in the hours of committing an alledged rape car in a NYC hotel. He was chased, stopped at the airport, dragged back to the 9th precinct all in handcuffs and on TV cameras. That was even before he was given a fair trial. What political immunity? Give what face to foreigners? All bullshyte... Law and order should stand no matter which nationalities or colour you are. Don't show a preference to protect the ang mohs then say we leave it to the courts. It doesn't do your credibility any good, MIW.

I do recall some time back that the victim rejected a settlement by the FT which was offered thru the police. It could be that the IO was reprimanded for his role in trying to help the FT settle the case ( i could be wrong). I think there is certainly more than what is being reported in the article.
I think the main reason they don't want to make it mandatory is bc they want to have way out of sticky situation. For example sometimes convicting someone may lead to political pressures or unwanted attention, hopefully the rich powerful individual can run away, this is not our problem any more. (again this is just a personal opinion, i hope the pro govt supporters don't ask me for specific examples)
