Petrol gauge

Hi all,

I am having problems with my petrol gauge. Sometimes its reading is half tank even when i pumped it full. How does the petrol tank works. I heard the BMW tanks is weights the petrol to give a reading. Is that true, cause i thought all tanks users floats. Can someone help me out?

your pump is spoilt. simply bring it in to change it

Float system. Possible fault :

1) left fuel sensor kaput
2) right fuel sensor + fuel pump kaput
3) carbon watchamacallit choke(in the engine bay one)

Just a check, did u pump petrol with the engine running ?

Nope. Always pump petrol with the engine switch off although have seen some drivers pumping fuel when the engines on. Dangerous ah!

ok, just in case, as fuel gauge will creep up extremely slow if one pumps while engine is on....

Where is a good place to purchase these parts? Or how much will it cost?

You can try any of the workshops listed on this website. Ie: Juzz for Cars or BVO etc... They should be able to locate the problem and fix it up for you in no time. No need to stress/guess the problem. Good Luck

the pump cost about $400+, if your car is still not under warrenty. If you have no time, i teach you one trick. Just call the BMW emergency assist, remind the guy to stock up on the E46 fuel pump, and he'll come down to your location to change it for you, so you dont have to waste time, coz time is more important than money right. changing it doesnt take more than 10 minutes, coz it's simply screwed in only. any amatuer can DIY and change fuel pump too.

unfortunately the e46 fuel pump consist of the pump + float. thats why it cost so much. In contrast, the E39 fuel pump and float are 2 separate units, and therefore only cost about $200+. So unless you are willing to live with a faulty fuel float gauge, and rely only on your tripmeter, then you must change out the whole pump.

The problem is that i am not in Singapore. I just finish my uni and started working. did not expect the pump to be so expensive. Hmmmm..... Headache! Is there any 2nd hand ard from scarp yards?

hey, i experienced dis b4 last year wit my e39. i went back to performance n they say it was the power control card faulty mayb due to engine washing. it cost me abt 200+

never buy 2nd hand fuel pump. it'll spoil on you very soon.
