One RFT tyre down (possibly) :(

Hi folks,

My RFT indicator came on the other day (red, not yellow). I was surprised as to why as my tyres are in pretty good condition (my 320i is about 2.5 years old with less than 25k mileage) and I've also gotten my tyres rebalanced not too long ago etc. Also, I'm using stock tyres.

Anyway, I went to the gas station to check the tyre pressure and pump air. As it turns out, the air pressure of my right rear tyre was quite low while the other 3 tyres seemed ok. I filled them up with air and went on my merry way.

That said, I suspect that the tyre is losing air. It's not punctured but perhaps there's an issue with the valve somewhere. So, I plan to get this looked into and was hoping for some help from the pros here.

1. Which tyre-place would you recommend? I stay in Katong so somewhere nearby would be great.

2. Assuming that there's a leak, I guess I'll need to consider repairing the leak (if possible) or changing tyres. If I'm able to repair the leak, is this safe? I don't do long distance driving too often though I do make occasional trips to KL.

3. If I have to replace the tyre, I believe I'll need to replace them in pairs, right? Anyone know how much RFTs cost these days? Or have any recommendations? I know people may disagree but I'd like to keep to RFTs at least for the time being.

Thanks! :)

RFT RE050 17inch 225 costs about 400 per piece. Price as at 2-3 months back.

You should have the aforementioned tyre checked by another tyre shop for any small nails that can miss your eye. And to check for nails, you need a 2 man effort to be easier.

Hope it helps!

Re: One RFT tyre down (possibly) :(

u looking for performance or comfy tyres?

Re: One RFT tyre down (possibly) :(

Thanks folks - really appreciate the quick reply.

I'm looking for comfy tyres. I'm not a speeder so don't think performance tyres would be of a huge benefit to me. I'd like something which is generally safe and fuss-free.

Run flat best for your need if $$$ is not a problem
DO remember if you have driven for some time better change them if just for a few KM you may consider repair but do it only internally at least you can ask the tyre shop people to inspect internally got any internal demaged which can not be seen from outside,so the outside plug repair cannot see inside got problem or not,.
Be Safe :nehnehhh:

not every shop know how to change this kind of tyre, if you are worry they scratch your Lovely wheel do go to those reputable shop who can do the job professionally or you can ask the tyre distributor to recommend the authorised dealer who can handle this kind of tyre

Thanks, Slater. Any idea how much these would cost me? I'd like a gauge since I don't wanna get conned for being a newbie.

Also, does it make sense for me to have a pair of these tyres while the other pair are my stock tyres?

i suggest u change all four for optimal performance. no point changing 2 and not the other 2. seriously.

I paid about $220 for one of my 17" 225/45.

Re: One RFT tyre down (possibly) :(

hope to hear of ur decision soon.

Re: One RFT tyre down (possibly) :(

Yah... trying to decide. I'm not particularly keen to change all 4 tyres given that 3 of the tyres are still in really good condition (in my eyes anyway).

U should just repair the 1 tire......just make sure it's not bcos of a nail or screw that's causing the leak.

My sis kenna nail on 1 tire (E88 120i), stupid warning light also red, then PML ask her to change new RFT tire....$400++ not inclusive of labor!!

I ask her to go Stamford to check......found the nail, pull out, repair cost $10.

Problem solved......she never sms me anymore = everything is working fine...... ;p

You should invest in a aftermarket TPMS like the Tyredog TPMS!

Then every day you can monitor your tire pressure on the fly & notice any leakage immediately!

Any Stamford Tyres will be ok......they're pretty good with RFT tires as alot of stock cars with RFT tires goes to Stamford to change to aftermarket tires, so they're well versed.

yes that is 1 of the stamford outlet, they also the agent for continental tyre and do have RFT from conti.
if all your 4 tyres are pretty new so you could just change 1 new 1.
otherwise to repair ask them to Do only the internal way (best) for safety which they should DO.
changing to normal type you will no longer enjoy the benefit of runflat which in the event of puncture if instant flat you have to stop your car.
putting a external TPMS will benefit you toknow which particular tyre is leaking.
to be i dont find it necessary since your car had already equiped with BMW.
Just MHO

Re: One RFT tyre down (possibly) :(

Well said....but our BMW TPMS won't tell you which tire is leaking.....& the stupid warning only comes when the tire pressure is way low.....kinda too late liao.....hahahaha
