Noisy neighbours - what can I do?

It's driving me nuts. I can't work in peace at home in the daytime, neither can I sleep in peace at night. Banging, knocking, ticking, pounding almost 24/7. I'm referring to my neighbours upstairs.

Called police, HDB, MP... doesn't seem to help.

Other than moving house (which I can't for at least 5 years) what can I do? Send a lawyers' letter?

Hi detach,

is your neighbour renovating their house?
what about other neighbour that stay beside/around (did they complain?)

cheers

Re: Noisy neighbours - what can I do?

They aren't renovating. It's just their kids and the parents themselves. In the day the kids play in the house and jump around, throw/drop things on the floor, bump into furnitures (and drags them along the floor) and slam doors.

At night the parents walk like king kong, sometimes they hammer or pound on something, making a tick-tick-tick-tick noise. I think one family member works odd hours, so he comes home late and makes the noise, and then the mum wakes up early, and makes noise. So at 2am, I get noise. At 5-6am, I get noise too. It's driving me nuts and I am having a constant headache when I'm in my house.

I tried to talk to them, and they said they've been staying here for years and I just moved in and I started complaining, and that I'm nit-picking on them. My previous owner actually used the house as a small office and doesn't stay here...

I checked with their next-door neighbours and they don't have any issues. All they complain about is the slamming of doors (which comes from the units above/below them).

I've stayed in HDB since 9 years old man, this is really the worst. I think the structure of the building is part to blame. I can simply just use my hand and pound on a wall, and my whole house vibrates. It's terrible.

Hi detach,

unless you approach your MP to write a letter to HDB to grant you to shift to another location (not sure if this can be help for your case since you just move-in.)

probably for house hunting in future is better to check the neighbour first before make the purchase....

cheers

Re: Noisy neighbours - what can I do?

write a letter paste on their letter box..let the whole block read..haaa

That might be a solution but I just bought this house like a year ago, spent some $ renovating it, and now I'm moving again. Given the recent property prices and COV I'll probably have to sell my E90 and ride motorbike... sigh. Not a very good solution for now.

I mean, even if I bought a house and it's nice and peaceful, one day the unit above me sells then a new dude comes in and makes noise, is there nothing I can do?

Any lawyers in here? Can I sue their asses? I think it's cheaper than my reno + a new flat COV + interest paid to HDB.

Re: Noisy neighbours - what can I do?

Police is useless, they can only talk... Unless they catch them 'in action' then they can seize the thing that's causing nuisance, e.g. Radio. But kids jumping and king kong daddy, they can't do anything.

Re: Noisy neighbours - what can I do?

don't waste time...even car vandal caught on video police also cannot do anything...freaking useless
go up, knock the door....verbally f*** the owner until whole block can hear.....that will do the trick
thats the last resort though

Re: Noisy neighbours - what can I do?

everytime they king kong on your ceiling(their floor), you can use your bamboo stick/similar object to do an action = reaction. Last time i go my friend's place, his neighbour beneath always do that. Its sends a pretty obvious message that you are pissed. Once they got sick of your bambooing action, comes down to complain, then its WAR!

Re: Noisy neighbours - what can I do?

buy a comfy ear mug and wear it for 3 years, after that sell your flat and buy another hdb,but this time buy the top floor.

Re: Noisy neighbours - what can I do?

CAn I propose the AH BENG way of dealing with it, which comes with some risk of landing in trouble.:topicsuc:

I used to grow up in Pai Gia Town near what is now the REDHILL MRT AREA, notorious for all sorts of low lifes who will loan-shark, vice, fight, quarrel, this and that....

Used to be sandwiched between 2 stupid neigbbies, one below is a Taoist thinggie which creates noise like as if everyday is the ghost festival. The one on top of me has something like what you described, makes all sorts of noise you can hear except those noise from Bong-ing. We used to use a wooden pole or bamboo pole and poke the ceiling n floor depending on which idiot u deal with. When they come over and complain, we just told them "ever heard of LPPL?" Some people living in some HBDs, I hate to say, should be sent to the zoo with AhMeng the orang utan bcos I think thats where they best belong.

But after many years I also gave up and moved into private homes, life is tough, but the legacy of Beng neighbourhood and growing up still lives on.

Fighting fire with fire will only make the fire bigger leh... sigh.

Re: Noisy neighbours - what can I do?

Wear ear plugs? It helps to some extend. And u'll get used to it eventually. We always does.

Re: Noisy neighbours - what can I do?

u can use high tech counter offensive method. it is not advisable but it works. tv will not work, internet and gsm signal too. plus high frequency countermeasure which will cause everyone of them to go mad and may even commit suicide. it is dangerous, but its one solution.
