Ride comfort compromise but still acceptable.

18" tire profile wld be 225/40/18 not 35s.

'With such extreme low profile tyres, I was told by friends that such tyres are very prone to puncture over a certain period of wear and tear'

Nvr heard of tis be4, most of the bros here running on 18"s, but so far so gd.

ride comfort will also depends if u change the suspension with the rims. stock suspension with 18" rims shld be quite ok.

dun think the puncture part is true. Otherwise there will be more punctures of 19" tyres going by the same logic. hurhurhur!

:errr:

Also depends on the type of tyres u use. Some have softer sidewalls and hence can still be quite comfortable.

The ride comfort with the original staggered (225/40/R17 & 245/40/R17) set up on the sports edition has excellent handling.

If you change all 4 tires to 225/40/R18, you may immediately notice :
- Increased sensitivity in handling
- A lot more body roll. Very uncomfortable.

No compromise to comfort is noticeable.

Lowering your ride and/or using better shocks (eg Sachs Performance Kit or others) is one way to correct the problem. (Thanks ACBoy)

My 2 cents & personal experience.

does changing to 18s from 17s really give you significantly increased body roll?

i can understand if the 17s came with less contact patch but it seems that the 17s has even more contact patch than the 18s!

i dont think the car will be oversteering at all.

but, to qualify things, if the car is really oversteering, the body roll would be less.

the logic goes like this. Changing one's tyres to a bigger one (bigger contact patch) with stock suspension, will result in more body roll as the car now grips better, and with the higher cornering speeds now achievable, the car rolls more. (lower profile tyres reduces body roll a little actually, but the magnitude is overshadowed by the increased body roll brought about by higher cornering speeds)

so if the car over or understeers, grip is lost, lateral grip is lower, and thus body roll will be lesser. a little irrelevant here liao but just for discussion's sake.

Wah, if already staggered, wldn't that be betta than 18" all round?

hi all,

I will be getting a brand new 318i Sport edition very soon from PML. Delivery is expected in December.

I'm thinking about changing my 17" M sport rims to perhaps a set of 18" rims for the better looks and improved handling. However, I'm wondering if this change would compromise the ride & comfort far too much because the tyres profile would be reduced to 35 (I guess) ? does anyone out there has any experience of using 18" on 318 sport?

With such extreme low profile tyres, I was told by friends that such tyres are very prone to puncture over a certain period of wear and tear ? Is it true ?

Whatever your decision................CONGRATULATIONS on your brand new ride! You'll definately enjoy every second behind the wheels
