necessary to have diiferent size of tire

Hi

Just trying to check if it is necessary to have different size of tire for the front & back

current set up

front 225/45/R17
Back 245/40/R17

why is there a need for this setup? can I use all the same size throughout , 225/45/R17 ?

Cheers

Re: necessary to have diiferent size of tire

hi adrian,

normally the tires on the rear axle of a high performance rear wheel drive car have a larger width than those at the front. this is because with wider tires on the driven axle, the power of the engine is transmitted to the road surface more efficiently with the higher level of grip. this also translates to a higher level of safety.

i'm not entirely sure why the tires up front are narrower, but it could be to improve steering response, road feel, reduce risk of aqua-planing, let the car change direction easier because of less resistance and maybe put less stress on the steering mechanism. those are just my thoughts, they may not be correct. haha.. don't take my answer wholesale.

it would be better to stick to the original set up of your car. if your car came with staggered sizes, then stick to them. this is because your rear wheels may be wider than your front wheels. modifying the tire size wouldn't be a great idea.

however, if you can be sure that all your wheels are of equal size, then changing all the tires to a single size would be fine.

hope i've helped.

cheers,
saify

Re: necessary to have diiferent size of tire

If you have the M68 rims, another reason for the tyre size difference is because the rims are of different width in the first place. The rears are half an inch wider, so need wider tyres.

But I've heard of PML messing up (not sure intentional or not) and giving people all 4 M68 rims of the same size before, so better check first.

U need to check on ur rear rims first, if the size is indeed 1/2 inch larger than the front as pointed out above, then u should stick to the staggered set up

If u rims are of same size then it's not necessary to stagger the tires.

Re: necessary to have diiferent size of tire

unless one does really aggressive driving, or, has tremendous power going to the rear wheels, or your rims size already comes staggered, dont go for staggered tyres setup. a useful point is that staggered tyres setup promote a more understeer inclination which is what most average drivers can safely handle.

however, it's always cheaper to buy 4 x same tyres, you can change front to back easily, and for those cars that carry full size tyres+rims, you can use it without screwing up the geometry of the car.

or, you can just go for staggered setup just for the shiok feeling. but it's not advised. The car always feels nimbler on similar sized tyres, compared to one with a staggered setup, coz the E46/E90 has a very well balanced chassis, so it's good to maintain the neutrality.

Re: necessary to have diiferent size of tire

if you realise, the 225/45 17 front set-up is the optimum fit for a 7.5 width rim. while the 245/40 17 rear set up is the minimum fit for a 8.5 width rim. optimum fit for a 8.5 width wheel is 235/40, this will lower the rear tyre profile from 98mm to 94mm while the front is 101.25mm... think this changes the geometry RaceBred??? unless we do something to correct this???

see the M3 spec for their 18" wheels. it is 225/40 18 for 8" wide front & 255/35 18 for 9" wide rear. however, it is optimum tire fitment for both front & rear... 90mm & 89.25mm respectively for height profile.

like saify said, narrow front to reduce aqua-plane. wider rears to have better grip.

however, like racebred said, staggered set-up is more expensive when it comes to tire change.

Re: necessary to have diiferent size of tire

actually in my opinion, unless one drives hard at 90% upwards, squeezing out all the available traction from the tyres, and balancing them between grip and drift at the limit, it really doesnt matter what sort of tyres you slap on. Any talk on staggered setup, or suspension tuning, or tyre pressure, etc, is all tit toh one.

basically, just do ahead and buy whatever setup that pleases the owner. There's no wrong answer. (unless you run on 4 x space savers.)
