N42 Problems..HELP!!

Hi all,

Been having these problems lately..what could be wrong.

1. Loud exhaust - The car seems to be very very loud during revs compared to other valvies....no punctured exhaust noted...SC told me something is not right with the cataylic converter. I suspect the silencer...sifu ???

2. Idling is erratic intermittently - Not sure but some say the idle control valve needs cleaning. The needle just jumps between 600 to 800 rpm intermittently during idling.

3. Vibration felt through steering when revving from 4000 rpm. I can feel the vibration of the engine on my steering. Could it be the control arm bushing is time to change?

Thanks a bunch!....

I doubt this is due to control arm; if it's so, you'll feel the effect more at low speed than at high speed.

How old is your car? Could be premature wear of the engine or transmission mounts, although usually you don't feel the effect of these until maybe 4th/5th year. Do you feel vibration in other parts of the car, e.g. floor/door?

Come to it, I can feel it on the doors as well when the engine revs above 4K rpm. My car is almost 3 years old 2.0 Valvetronic. Maybe its attributed to the loud exhaust note I am hearing from the engine whenever the RPM is over 4000 rpm (ie: problem 1). Any idea?

Re: N42 Problems..HELP!!

Just bring it to a workshop and ask them to check your engine mounts for you. Like I said, usually mounts are changed at 4th/5th year but it may vary for some. Your symtoms do sound like they're worth taking a look at.

I'm not sure if they're related to your exhaust being loud though.

Re: N42 Problems..HELP!!

I dunno what is your definition of loud but looking at the whole post and coming from a N42 engine, i suggest u send it to a workshop with proper diagnoistic tool like the DIS or Modic One to pull out the fault.

Highly suspect ur car got one of the typical problem the N42 got, aka the ignition coil.

What u r getting is engine misfiring, causing the car to vibrate, which also cause the engine hunt at idle.

I might be wrong but all u need to do is to plug on the diagnoistic tool and the result will show.

cheers

Re: N42 Problems..HELP!!

Yup highly suspect is misfiring.

Either one of the spark plugs fouled or that particuler coil burnt or could be the mosfet inside ECU burnt.

1. Loud exhaust... most driver want it loud.. hehehe.. btw, how loud is ur exhaust ? normally loud sound for valvetronic cames from engine bay... not the exhaust unless u change ur rear box.

2. Normal valvetronic RPM range for idling is around 850rpm to 950rpm.. u must give allowance for compressor cut in, lighting, n etc (use MODIC to solve this). if the needle jumping like disco lights, confirm is ignition coil faulty.

3. Ur enging mounting bushing, 3 years is due to change normally. or ur wheel balancing ? control arm ? too many things to cause it. bring to workshop, let them check better than you guess.

My valvetronic followed me for 3.5 years... frankly speaking.. i dun like valvetronic :naughty: . In-line-six D-VANOS is the best. :yummie:

yea.. i agree with Eric .. engine misfiring.. happened to me already, one of the ignition coils .... after that ECu detects and cuts the engine power. go back to PML to solve it.. won't take more than a day .

Re: N42 Problems..HELP!!

Alo guys,
I changed the ignition coils to the BOSCH...all 4 of them....not much different. The RPM jumps INTERMITTENTLY, from a low rpm (700rpm) to a normal rpm (900rpm)....some say its the idle control valve that needs cleaning....

Piggyboyz, plugged into the GT1 and no faults came out...

WT, what sort of MOSFET are you referring to in the ECU?

Yup Calvin, the loud sound is from the engine bay....

Beem.. set the RPM idle at 800 - 950 regions without air-cond. I drove Valvetronic too... very first batch..

sound from engine bay is normal.. its the valvetronic motor sound... 3 years..is like that.. do u change filter ? if u use K&N, it will be more louder.

The mosfet is like a 'resister' like thing (squarish in shape). What it does is to provide ampere signal to the coil. So each coil will have one mosfet. A 4potter will have 4 mosfet in a row inside the ecu box. 6 potter will have 6 mosfet.

Above also varies with different ECU makers. Bosch, Siemens....

I had mine repaired. Buy mosfet from Sim Lim Towers and re-solder it. Cost only $200...Where if you replace the ECU from PML, it will cost you abt $1.4K. Also painfully paid once.

Re: N42 Problems..HELP!!

Its not the tick tick sound...just that when you rev...its is ear deafining inside the cabin to hear the engine soooo loud above 4K RPM..brought it to the SC..they are not sure what issit but sure its louder than the other valvies around....

And I am on all stocks...no K&N filter...

The symptom sounds like misfiring leh. Else is a leaking exhaust either a hole in the exhaust line or at those flanges.

Re: N42 Problems..HELP!!

But if misfiring, then the engine should have less power on the tap? What was ur symptom that causes u to replace the MOSFETs?

Re: N42 Problems..HELP!!

I do not experience that...guess nothing is wrong with the coils...
