Mixing 2T Engine Oil into your Fuel tank

Not sure if anyone still remembers this - But hearsay adding 2T engine oil into the fuel tank help to provide some lubrication to the piston, cylinder wall and exhaust valve areas.

Its suppose to go into a 2 stroke motorcycle engine - and if you remembers how a 2 stroke engine works -

So basically, the petrol itself carries the engine oil into the combustion chambers to lubricate the moving parts. On 2 stroke motor bikes - you might see a separate tank holding 2T oil ready for a controlled mixing with the petrol before it get injected into the engine.

It has been a long time since I have done this and a neighbor told me he is still doing this to his GTR. So I decided to get a bottle and pour about 300ml into my fuel tank. When I bought it at the Esso station the cashier looked at me and reminded me 3 times that its for old motor bikes .......

This is the one I chose and the specs - Read the part about the chainsaw below ........

"Applications

Mobil 1 Racing 2T is recommended for lubrication of two-stroke engines used in the highest performance motorcycles, snowmobiles and lean oil/fuel ratio chain saws. It is ideal for applications where API TC or JASO FD performance standards are recommended. The product helps to provide outstanding performance even in some of the harshest operating conditions.

Specifications and Approvals

Mobil 1 Racing 2T meets or exceeds the requirements of the following industry specifications:

API TC
ISO E-GC, E-GD
JASO FC, FD
SAE Grade 1, Grade 2

Typical Properties

Mobil 1 Racing 2T

Viscosity (ASTM D445)
cSt @ 40 ºC 83
cSt @ 100 ºC 12.7
Viscosity Index 154
Sulfated Ash, wt% (ASTM D874) 0.15
Pour Point, ºC (ASTM D97) -42
Flash Point, ºC (ASTM D92) 100
Density @15.6 ºC g/ml (ASTM D4052) 0.884"

It has been 2 weeks since - And I have to say that the throttle felt lighter and the FC did improve by a wee bit. Told my neighbor about it - he told me I needed to whack the car to Malacca for a coffee and I would feel the difference on the way back ..... maybe will try after the CNY.

Btw, I poured 300ml into my XC90 as well ..... but did not tell CO about it. 2 days later she told me the car seems to have a lighter throttle and the ride seems to cruise more than often (stepped less on the accelerator)..........Like a mystery.

** I do not work for Esso .....

Re: Mixing 2T Engine Oil into your Fuel tank

I use Esso 2T all the time.

Re: Mixing 2T Engine Oil into your Fuel tank

A hoax, a prank or really a mystery? I m  ........ and i conclude i m still

Re: Mixing 2T Engine Oil into your Fuel tank

Wow.. bro.. i tot onli my younger days riding bike (SDR, TZR, Aprillia 2 stoke engine) nid to add 2T into the fuel tank?? BMW also nid ah???

Re: Mixing 2T Engine Oil into your Fuel tank

On a sidenote: do you use any kind of fuel system cleaner such as Chevron Techron?

Re: Mixing 2T Engine Oil into your Fuel tank

Logic seems ok ..... And the 2T is suppose to vaporize in there (unlike the 4T where it will kill the injectors) - and if you look at the content - harmless stuff with some upside.

So my thought is .... Why not.

** miss the motorbikes ......

Occasionally the Redline SL1 - highest content of PEA one can find in a bottle I hear .....

Re: Mixing 2T Engine Oil into your Fuel tank

I used to add a little 2T to my old rotary engined ride every fuel refill for abt 3 years. All it gave me was a choked fuel filter somewhere along the way that I replaced. No difference in throttle response or FC.

Still unsure about the protective properties of this treatment but my engine was still running smooth and strong at 100k km when I sold the car.

Re: Mixing 2T Engine Oil into your Fuel tank

I think 2T got a few type depending on what the base stock is ..... You used the fully synthetic one ?

Re: Mixing 2T Engine Oil into your Fuel tank

Will it result in leaner running?
Will choke the piping or injectors?
Will cause problem to cat? Got smell?

I remember my dad used to love 2 stroke bikes...until emission enforcement got more siao on by using video cam at road side...every time go inspection need to "close" the 2T before going in...

Yes fully synthetic. I regularly added 100-200ml every refuel.

Re: Mixing 2T Engine Oil into your Fuel tank

The ECU should help compensate and maintain the AFR - it should result in a more complete or controlled burning which is something positive IMHO. Will observe more ...... And collect some stats .....

This sounds similar to Liquid Moly's ceratec except that one goes into the engine oil compartment and mixes with the EO.

Re: Mixing 2T Engine Oil into your Fuel tank

The key thing is choosing the "correct" 2T. The key ingredient I was looking for is polyisobutylene.

That compound when mixed with petrol changes the way it reacts in combustion - makes it burn cleaner and slower.

There are some cheap 2T oil with vegetable oil as base with no PIB. And that will kill your cats and create lots of smoke. Lean the AFR etc .......

PIB is is usually added to ensure smokeless (carbon less) burning with no odor. So it does not clog or carbonized anything.

So just note a couple of things -

1. Must be fully synthetic
2. Must contain Polyisobutylene (higher better)
3. JASO FC or FD compliant

Thus why I chose the Esso racing 2T. And it's not cheap.

The opposite of slow, complete or controlled burning is pre-ignition or detonation causing pings and retardation in timing. So this may explain why adding 2T oil seems to help improve throttle feel (and FC along the way).

The side benefit of lubrication which helps with the exhaust valves or pistons comes from the additives also added to the 2T...........

Sounds interestin..gonna try on my F10...

Bro, so you used Esso or Mobil?

Re: Mixing 2T Engine Oil into your Fuel tank

Adding 2T to petrol reminds me of my good old days when I was riding Yamaha scrambler WR 2 stroke engine. Interesting findings RBB
