minor scratch removal

Hi guys

I have some minor scratches on the car, and am looking for a way to fix this.

I've heard mentions of Meguiers Scratch-X and Zaino Z-5 on this forum, but i'm not quite sure which is best for my case. Am thinking of picking up some Scratch-X first to try. Could anyone tell me where I could find some of this stuff? I live around AMK.

Thanks!

U should be able to get them at some petrol stations, that's where i managed to get it!

Hi Azrielsc,

I tried on my Black Car.. Dun really work for me. I still have it in my Boot.. can let u try cos I will not be using it anymore.

Hi all! :)

IMHO, Scratch-X will only work on very *very* mild scratches.. Those faint ones that you see under very bright lights and odd angles. If you can even run your fingernail lightly over the surface and feel the scratch, it'll be quite difficult to polish it off, esp with hand polish methods..

I've actually gone though a whole tube.. kekeke.. It seems to help with very fine swirls, even those took several minutes of polishing with the pad before it works..

The art of ridding scratches is still fairly elusive unfortunately.. The best I've done is with a handheld orbital polisher and 15 minutes per small section... And it's not wise to do it too often.. :errr:

Cheers,
Alvin.

Puny,

you have your own handheld orbital polisher ah? wah... that's pretty hardcore bro...

and i agree, more often than not, the scratch removers don't really help except for the most superficial of scratches... but what i've found is that generous layers of waxing after application of a scratch remover can help make the scratches look less obvious. in this case, the lighter your car colour, the better the effect.

all the best.

Hi guys,
Pls help/advise me if you can.

Just got my Orient Blue 318 1 mth ago and it had already suffered more than 10 scratches. Got 3 long scratch marks just on my bonnet!!! :furious: Stupid me went to use "Carglo" (I think) to remove the scratch marks and now, there are swirl marks and worse, those areas that I rub became lighter in colour as compared to the surrounding. I dare not do anything more to worsen the situation.

What am I supposed to do? Buy a scratch remover and wax for a DIY or send it to the professional?? :verysad:

Hmm, best advise i can give is not to DIY yourself without someone experienced to guide u along, especially if u're planning on using abrasive cleaners/procedures.

As for your scratch marks, its not the length that matters, its the depth....

Swirl marks can be dealt with by using a light abrasive but experience is needed or u're just gonna make things worse. remember, as long as the damage hasn't gotten through the wax to your paintwork, there's still hope for salvage.

David,

Whoah... lightening of color is quite serious. I don't think the color's fading right?..

Pardon me. I've never heard of Carglo. Is it an off-the-shelf product?

I reckon it looks lighter due to the intesive swirls and thus when light hits the surface, there's a matt or marred surface.

I suggest dun DIY yrself anymore at this stage... Get a pro to do it... Swirl marks can be easily remove by Light Machining... Ask the grooming shop pros how u shld take care of yr car after u have got rid of the swirl marks....

Try to use 100% cotton cloth to dry down your car. Takashimaya dept store can get very soft and good quality 100% cotten cloth. cost you $4.90 per pce. Cannot remember the brand..

Yah man....learnt my lesson already. Scared like shit already

Puny, carglo is off the shelf product - can get it from petrol station or carrefour. Don't use it unless the car is light coloured - tried it on my old car and it worked tho.

Thanks Louis. Saw your ad and the packages are quite attractive. Will either call you or your partner for an appt after CNY. With all due respect, how do your products compared against Zaino? Heard so much abt Zaino in this forum and it appears that it is THE product.

For your ride, I think the zaino package shd be $400 for 3 rounds of treatment. The recommendation is to zaino every 3 mths but I am gonna streatch my package over a year as... I am juz too lazy

Hei Hei Hei......very tempted to try Zaino man :)

Yes, i know that there has been a lot of good stuff said about zaino and i do not deny that it is a reputable and well established brand name. That is not to say that other products, despite being less well known in the local market, are not as effective.

Also, the level of shine achieved does not solely depend on the product used; a large part depends on how proficient and experienced the groomer is with the particular product he is using. We have used our brand of car grooming products for many years and are confident that we can deliver a level of shine that you will not be disappointed with.

However, nothing beats seeing it in the flesh for yourself. Perhaps you might be more comfortable making a decision after dropping by our Bishan Branch to take a look at some of our customers' cars while they're being groomed.

We will be opened from 10am to 2pm on CNY eve and will reopen after a week's break on the 16th of Feb(operating hours: 3pm to 10pm)

I hope this has addressed your uncertainty about our product.

All the above is with respect to our grooming products. Another important component of a car grooming package is the quality of service that the company is able to provide. We have always prided ourselves on this point and have received many kind words attesting to that on this forum. But alas, satisfaction with the level of service is rather subjective and so I can only say that the best way to find out is to give our company a try and gauge your comfort, with our level of service, for yourself.

As a fellow beemer owner, I feel your pain and hope that you will be able to fix that little boo boo on your paint work soon, irregardless of which company you choose to go to.

cheers

Hi Hymics

Thanks for the offer! I will have to get back to you, cos I'm a bit nervous that I might make the scratches worse... but thanks so much!

Just to update (since there seems to be quite a few swirl mark problems going round!), I went down to see Chandra at Cazcomp on Sunday, and he took a look at the car. He said he should be able to help with the scratches, but he will have to buff the car. He said the Z-5 won't help that much. He also told me that there are alot of swirl marks on my car. We looked at it in bright sunlight so I could see all the marks. He told me that it was likely caused by the grooming done at the dealer since I never had any grooming done on it since collecting the car.

But the prep costs (buffing) before putting the zaino coats on is a bit ex since there are swirls all over the car. Will probably wait a bit longer before jumping in for any grooming.

Or would the rest of you recommend having it done while the car is still pretty new? Cos I thought might as well wait a while in case any other scratches occur *touchwood* before getting a proper polish job.

Louis, it was my first and a very amateurish one from Black and Decker. I've very little opportunities to use it because there are no power points in my MSCP unfortunately and the only times I manage to use it were at others' place/garage.

Sapphire black too... a tough color to manage indeed.. But I think my next car will be solid black given a choice.. :silenced:

Well, the choice will definitely be up to u but personally, I'll do it right when the car is new so that it would provide a certain level of protection right from the start!

Cheers!

Puny,

you would prefer jet black? i chose sapphire black because i thought the little itty bits of metallic specks would help mask the dust... as supposed to a solid black exterior which would just look dirty once a little dust has settled, IMHO.

melo, sorry abt this little OT.

cheers and happy lunar new year
