lazy luxury, go for auto.

go for the spirit of driving a lifestyle sportscar, = manual.

but seriously i would go for neither and look for an smg unit.

oic, i would have too, but smg on 2.5L discontinued for 2005. besides, manual cheaper lah....

The manual should be fine for Singapore. Just have to perfect your clutch control

hmm, perfect my clutch control? sounds like a good reason to take the car out for a spin :)

what abt the issue of maintenance?

i dun really wanna save 6k upfront only to have to cough out 10k more for maintenace of the manual for stuff like replacing clutch lining etc....

also, any idea abt the resale values?

I loved the manual E36 BMW that I drove in Oz when i was studying there. I just got my licence 1 week before and until today, it is one of the best and easiest manual car to drive - loved the biting point (very easy to find).

hi Louis,

It's me here !!!

Given a choice today between an auto and manual, I would still look for a manual car. It's a shame that PML does not bring in Manual nowadays, otherwise I would have got one instead. Ofthen, they said Steptonic can offer you the same result, but it cannot be compared in that way. Prior to my purchase of the 318 recently, I had been driving a manual for the last 12 years (Ever since I pass my license). IMO, there is more joy in the aceleration with a manual. I'm now driving the steptronic auto for 2 weeks liao, but I still can't convince myself that steptronic is better than the trusty manual.

Looks at EVo and WRX and you know why they are today still manual to achieve the raw aceleration (of course cost is another reason).

I have not tried SMG, so can't comment on it.

Manual transmission requires less maintenance - > cheaper. Petrol consumption is also generally lower. It's also lighter than auto transmission box.

The only bad thing I can think of is that you have to put your left foot to work. But you will get use to it after some time.

hi trogen :wavey: ,

i personally think the steptronic is just a gimmick... the most i do is push it into sports mode when i wanna overtake taxis :shoot: (although i find that the shifting action is also a useful excuse to get ur hand closer to your date's **** ;)... haha, AUTOroam....geddit? geddit?)

anyway, i find the manual shifting mode very "wannabe boy-racer"... my opinion only, pls dun flame. i think the autobox in my e46 318i is fantastic though, just the steptronic function that i find superfluous.

if it weren't for the very tempting cost savings of the manual option over the auto, i would most probably select the auto, simply because of a more ready second hand market and to avoid the "eee, how come manual?" & "u paid 200k for a manual car?" comments from my family and friends.

on the other hand, if there's any car in which a manual transmission would be more appropriate than an autobox, without seeming like the cheapskate that i truly am, it would have to be a roadster wouldn't it? so perhaps... decisions decisions... i'm almost sold on the idea of a manual but i still have to convince my kind "sponsor" (read: mum) though.

thanks to the forumers for all the input so far, pls keep them coming!!

Maintenance should not be expensive... depending on how you drive, then you need to change the clutch every 50k km to 70k km.

However, resale values of manual cars tend to be slightly lower.

Not true bro. I think alot of us quite grateful for the existence of the steptronics in our Oct trip up and down Cameron Highlands. Much more user-friendly and responsive compared to the traditional auto gearbox.

i see... i've never driven into malaysia before so i'm gonna have to take your word for it. just curious though, would u have prefered a manual or the steptronic on that trip up to cameron highlands?

louis

louis,

Take it from me...a manual diehard...except that 520i's do NOT come in manual....wanted to indent one in but...man how am I gonna sell it? :(

IF u wan manual, go for the Z4 2.2m. I am thinkin of taking one unit in as a 2nd car. Manual bimmers are just purrr-fect. My prev 316 and E46 318 were both manuals and i really miss the manual drive  . No worries of changing clutch as both had more than 100k kms on it

Try and Get Ash-boy to give his comments. He is driving a E46 320Ci manual..and he lurves it too

Radon39,

2.2m? is that available on special indent? i had the impression PML were only willing to bring in the 2.5 and 3.0. have u spoken to your sales rep on the possiblity of a 2.2? i might be meeting mine this evening or tmr morning, so i'll ask her then. oooh... tingling with excitement now...

confirm, guarantee plus chop that i'll get one if the 2.2L manual/auto is available(assuming it is at least 10k cheaper)... group buy anyone? :)

YOOHOO :wavey: .......PML PEOPLE. ARE YOU READING THIS??

louis,

the 2.2 is avail thru PI. Not sure if PML brings in the 2.2

Last checked, was quoted 169k for the 2.2 manual

spoke to them, but TTS only keen on selling whatever they already ordered (urban green 2.5 and tit. silver 3.0), they aren't keen on special orders.

J4C told me they could only source for 2.5 and 3.0 too.

so who was the PI who quoted u on the 2.2m??

Manual if I have to do Cameron again. But for Singapore road with the bad jams we have sometimes, auto is the preferred mode for me.

Hi all,

does anyone here know whether PML has ever brought in Manual E46 318i Valvetronic ? If no, do they accept special indent ?

how about the PI, such as TTS ?

u sure?

i hear that discounts from PML aren't available for special indents.... meaning no more 139K for ur sports edition.....

try amos, from juzz4cars.
