WHAT kind of a wife wouldn't be shocked to find her husband's underwear in her maid's drawer?
The 37-year-old woman, who is more comfortable being called 'Lisa', admitted that she became increasingly shocked with the things she found in her maid's drawer.
When contacted, the executive officer, who is also a mum to three children between the ages of two and 16 years old, said: " I just had a nagging feeling in my heart to go through her things that day."
"The first thing I saw was my husband's handkerchief that hadn't been washed. I deliberately laid out the handkerchief to give her a sign that I had already seen it.
"I didn't want to say anything first. I wanted to see what she would do next. But after a few days, I went back to her drawer to check and the handkerchief was still there. She just tossed it aside, like there was nothing wrong."
Friendlier with men
According to Lisa, she had employed this particular maid from central Java after she had been returned by her previous employer.
The employment agency said the maid had claimed to be 21 years old but was in actual fact only 18. She was also unmarried.
"If there were male guests at my house and they needed to go to the bathroom, she would always be in the kitchen trying to start a conversation with them. But she would never do it in front of us.
"She will ask, 'Where are you from, Mas?", 'Mas this...', 'Mas that...' She was always trying to get them to talk to her. Sometimes she doesn't even realise that they are my own male relatives," Lisa said.
The maid would generally be much friendlier with men. She was also more comfortable speaking to Lisa's husband than Lisa herself.
"It could be because I am fierce and she's more comfortable with my husband. But thankfully my husband is pretty firm and he will say, 'Go talk to Ma'am', the woman continued.
Tempting my husband
Lisa recalled an incident 10 years ago when the maid would deliberately leave the bathroom wrapped just in her towel.
"While my husband was sleeping, she would just enter the room because at that time, my child was still a baby and the cradle was still in the room.
"There was once she didn't realise that I was standing behind her. I noticed that her eyes were fixed on my husband who was still sleeping.
"When I asked her about it, she denied watching my husband sleep. She said she was just there to put the baby to sleep. I then told her that I've been watching her." Lisa said.
It was clear that the maid was a very brave individual.
She would also change the way she dressed when Lisa was not home.
"If my husband was to come home first, she would deliberately not wear a bra. When I came home, she would rush to her room to change. At first I didn't notice anything strange because her clothes were all the same.
"Little did I know, she hadn't been wearing a bra. My husband was the one who made me tell her to please wear a bra even when I wasn't home," Lisa continued.
Stealing underwear
But what made Lisa wonder was when she found her husband's underwear in her maid's cupboard.
"I always wash our undergarments together. So imagine, I'm the one that washes them... I'm the one that folds them... and suddenly they appear in her drawer.
"When I asked her how my husband's underwear ended up there and what her motive was, she said it was accidental. Is that logical to you?" questioned Lisa.
The attention showered towards her husband has made her question her husband's fidelity.
"It's not as if it hasn't happened before - a maid having an affair with her employer. I told my husband, 'If you want to have any sort of relationship with her, just go ahead and marry her. I am willing'.
"But my husband said there was really nothing going on and I was being silly. From the way he behaved, I believed him," she said.
According to her neighbour's maid, Lisa's maid also had relationships with Bangladeshi foreign workers. Lisa has even followed them.
Lisa remains patient even though her maid uses grocery money to buy cigarettes.
She did not have the heart to terminate her contract and continued to employ her until her two year contract ended.
"I couldn't bring myself to do it. I would threaten to send her home every time she did something funny but each time, she would beg me not to do it. She said she was working to earn money for her family," Lisa said.
Lisa said she has had enough of maids and will no longer employ one for her family.
Only now, after 10 years without a helper, is she thinking of getting help again as her kids are still young.
"I believe husbands should play their part. They need to be firm and strict with the maids and leave any issues related to the maid to the wife," she added.
Tips on how to live with your maid
- Ensure that the maid communicates with only the women in the family regarding any issues.
- Set rules with regards to her dressing at home.
- Say something to her if you notice that she has been too friendly with your husband.
- Do not pamper her or treat her too nicely.
