Just curious on petrol and exhaust sound

Any seniors could advise or technically explain above ?

Ie to say 95 vs 98 vs v power in relation to exhaust sound or more start ups ?

Could also add in Malaysia petrol as discussion as well.

Thanks

Re: Just curious on petrol and exhaust sound

I think exhaust sound doesn't change with petrol grade, but the engine itself may differ a little bit, just a little.

I ve pumped 95, 97 in Msia on my 320i and 335i. Generally, the 97 which gives more power and a smoother acceleration will result in a slightly quieter engine note. I ve even tried 100+ octane, its even quieter aand the turbos on the 335 seem to spool quicker.

No diff between 95/98 but Vpower sounds slightly louder.

Just change exhaust.... MTL

Unless your car is tuned for a specific fuel grade, there will be no difference. Meaning, if ur car can run on 95, even if u give it 98, there will be no difference... But if u are tuned for 98, if u use 95, the ECU will retard timings and u will feel performance loss, or even worse, detonation...

If your car will auto advance timings so much until u can feel difference with fuel grade above what it was tuned for, then what is tuning for?

Re: Just curious on petrol and exhaust sound

Modern car is equiped with computer control advance and retard ignition system, the octane difference between 95-97 is too small to obeserve any difference in exhaust sound nor start, the 97 will result slight increase in power which may be too small to be observed. 95 octane fuel in Singapore seems to be the best balance between economy(price per litre against distance travelled) and acceleration performance for BMW engine.

This is an FC thread in disguise!

535i can pump Ron 95 petrol?

Talking about Fuel Sound, not Fuel Consumption.

P.S. anyone tried pumping diesel? Hearsay the sound quite power... "vroooommkaboommm..."

Re: Just curious on petrol and exhaust sound

Hi I've just installed after market mufflers, will it affect my FC?

Confirm. My FC improved so much I feel like banging table for a refund!!!

Re: Just curious on petrol and exhaust sound

Most tuners here tune for 95 in case I go to MY - my tuner said so ......

Fact
SG V-Power's additive = Improves 'throttle' response for city driving (same V-Power additive used by e F1 team)
MY V-Power's additive = Improves FC for long distance travelling, not aplicable for SG expressway.

Strange but True
There's an exhaust smell differences between V-Power and non V-Power - verified by super sensitice nose but i cannot smell the differeces.

Disillutional
V-Power has better exhaust sound over 98 or 95.

Not CSB. My M exhaust, steering etc etc combine to give me 50BHP more. I never say Butt Hoot Power...

True on Malaysia petrol 97 petronas exhaust sounds soft n the flow based on butt feeling is seems to be a bit retard bss 335 on m performance exhaust.

On basis of Singapore 98 or v power in case of shell petrol it sounds louder.

Above on personal note only.

Tried 95 once but not to my liking so alternate to try 97/98/ v power.

98 sounds same as v power.

97 sounds abit choke.

Re: Just curious on petrol and exhaust sound

Higher octane petrol has a higher flash point to avoid pre-ignition (knocking). It also burns slower (controlled combustion).

If your engine has a high compression ratio (> 11), runs hot (e.g turbo application or cylinders > 6) and you like to rev at the high end a lot then high octane petrol can give you a few more km/h speed at the top end as the spark timing will or can be advanced. Will also be smoother in doing so.

So theoretically - based on the characteristics of high octane petrol above - If you use high octane fuel in low compression engine (< 9.5), and drive like a grandmother with a "not that hot" engine (> 107 Celsius) then you may end up with some carbon ......

Your engine will sound different when it's knocking etc.

I dun understand. Its illegal to pump 95 in malaysia for foreign cars. Its irrelevant that you have or you can, its illegal.

Nothing to do with migrating or working... down to car plate registration.

I cant pump 95 either.
