Is there any purpose for a wheel nut to be different from the rest?

Hi,

Whilst I was parking my car today beside another Bimmer, I accidentally noticed that one of its wheel nut is different from the other four, for all the wheels. Can anyone tell me what is that so? Maybe you can see the attachment for a clearer picture...

Isn't all wheel nuts are a standard fixture for all cars from PML? My ride is a 318iA, Pre FL.

Regards

its actually a wheel lock or somthing like that. Under the black cap is the same nut just like the others. Think it is suppose to deter wheel thefts.

If u open your tool box at the rear of your car, u actually have a tool to open that cap and u can see that the nut is the same for all 5

I believe that one may be a wheel nut lock. It's to make it more difficult for anyone who wants to steal your rims.

Hi xuexun,

You mean that is not a wheel nut, but merely a cover for it? does your car come with that too? To be frank, I did not touch it physically when I saw it earlier on?

And for the tool box you were referring, are you saying the one affixed onto the inner panel of our rear boot? I cannot recall anything special inside that can remove such cover. Anyway, my car do not come with any covers for the wheel nuts too, may be cos of that, my tool box will not have one.

Correct me, if I'm wrong here.

Regards

Actually under the plastic cap, the lug is different from the rest.
It usually some kind of pattern/design which cannot be unscrewed with
a standard lug wrench.
This is to deter thieves from stealing rims.

To unscrew the lock, you need a key which simply attached to the lock.
Once attached you can unscrew it with a stanard lug wrench.
The plastic cap in your picture is just cosmetic to make the lock look similar to the rest.

A picture is worth a 1000 words:

Hi,

Thank you... I've just made a check with Eng Soon, I was told told that it was a security lock for each individual wheel. A pack of four security nuts comes with 2X adapters for the s/nuts. Different batch of manufacturing will come in different patterns of the 'flowers' for the s/nuts.

Eack pack cost S$55.00 + GST.

Thank you all for your valuable information.

Regards

actually, in singapore, the anti-theft wheel nuts just makes things difficult for you to change tyres only.

Re: Is there any purpose for a wheel nut to be different from the rest?

But how many of us actually change our own flat tyres?

Mine is a 318iA and it comes with it... Think maybe only FL 318 models have them?

Nope. I don't have it on mine as well.

Re: Is there any purpose for a wheel nut to be different from the rest?

as i swap rims around pretty often, at the tyre shop, and the fine teeth in the anti-theft adaptor started to nuah and wear out. when they got pretty blunt, i threw them away for the regular wheel nuts, then i realised how stupid they are in the first place. hehehe

Re: Is there any purpose for a wheel nut to be different from the rest?

ya, i've never thought of bolts & nuts(including those anti-theft ones) are prone for wear & tear. time when it really happen & we are stuck in the tyre shop, think the mechanic have to whack off the entire nut. what will be the consequences, i think we know it.

i'm re-considering about issue now. thanks for all the valuable informations.

Bro, when you change your tyres, you don't need to pass that small gadget(where you get from the tool box in the boot) to the guy at the tyre shop meh? :ehhh:
