Is the A/C gas for continental cars different from those used in Japanese cars??

Hi,

My ride is currently a E46 pre-FL, Y2000. Over the past 1-2 weeks, I've noticed that my ride's air conditioning is not feeling that cold, as compared to before. Under same circumstances, the current situation will take a longer time to chill & it was far below the normal coldness than before, even I drove on the expressways. It was not warm air that was coming out, it's just not as cold as before. As I'm not the first owner of this car, so I wasn't aware whether this car has ever top-up any gas before my ownership.

I've been checking around & heard from some people that the A/C gas used in continental cars are different from those used in Japanese cars. Is that so? How many types of A/C gases are there in the market? Can anyone kind soul advise me the followings:
1) If the A/C gas is really different from those used in Japanese cars, what should I look for for my ride? Any special code or things that I need to take note?
2) Where can I find the reliable A/C shops for the top-up, what is the cost for such & how long will it last?

I hope I can hear from anyone here soon. As far as I know, when we drive a continental car into anywhere for the same kind of repairs or items, the price will be different from those who drive a Japanese car. I'll pay for the any repairs/items, but I don't like to be treated as a 'CARROT".

Thanking all of you in advance.

Regards

A/C gas depends on the make of the A/C compressor. There are a few types but most commonly used now is the R134a which is CFC friendly and I would say all cars manufacturers uses R134a type now. Even our house split units A/C and also the fridges!!

Its also abt time the A/C evaporator(looks like the radiator behind the headset) needs to be taken out and wash. Also change the micro filter under the bonnet nearest to the windscreen.

All above maintainence can be done by any of the workshop listed in this forum.

Cheers!

Eric,

You have forgotten to add:

Labour for changing the evaporator is pretty high, in the range of hundreds. PML charges S$700+ just for the labour. FYI.

Thanks
