Irregular Idling RPM

Guys, lately I noticed that my car's idling RPM fluctuates and sometimes drops to 400-500 then up again to around 800 whenever I put the gear shift at "P" after a long drive. This does not happen when I leave the gear shift at "D" and step on the brakes. This scenario occurs when at the traffic junction or waiting for somebody.

Initially, I though it may have been the K&N filter so I removed it and replaced back with stock air filter. It was ok for a few days but thereafter, the same "dipping" occurs again. Any advice?

Re: Irregular Idling RPM

I know yours is an E90 so not sure this helps. Had this problem on two separate E36es. First one was due to MAF sensor gone kaput. Second one due to dirty ICV. Got the first one fixed by Wee at BVO and the second one at R2D (Rodney)...

Re: Irregular Idling RPM

E90 320i (N46) has no MAF sensor, one thing less to worry

Hi,
My friend has this problem too....How old is your car ?

If your car is around 3+ years, then possible your ignition coil is going.

Re: Irregular Idling RPM

I had similar experiences on my E46.
First time it's one of the spark plug.
Second time it's one of the ignition coil.
Both times solved at R2D.

Re: Irregular Idling RPM

Just a quick update.

I have solved the irregular idling RPM problem. As it turned out, it was due to faulty ignition coils and BVO fixed it. Very quick and good service. Will definitely go back for future servicings.

Cheers.

Re: Irregular Idling RPM

it seems like faulty ignition coil is common for N46 huh .....
