has anyone installed the ipod interface on their E92/93? How much does it costs?
What's the diff btw this and using the AUX input in the centre armrest?

Hi,

This whole iPod saga has been a real frustrating ride for me.

I got the iPod interface installed upon purchase in my E93. It is the current "MOST" installation (i.e. iPod is in the glove box and plugs in via the iPod's data port and not the headphone socket.

I find this good if you have a small capacity ipod attached say 4 to 16GB. But if you want to bring along a larger music collection eg a fairly full iPod 80gb or 160gb, then there are limitations eg. the listing of songs etc. For example on my 160 GB iPod which has my whole CD colection about 10k songs, you can scroll artistes names on idrive screen till about letter "H", then it stops!! Also, you have to scroll manually all the way down to your intended artists line by line, i.e. there is no fast alphabetical scrolling no matter how fast you twirl my much abused idrive controller.

I did searches on the net and found that there is an upper limit of 255 artistes names...so much for U2 then. So then I had to create playlists with my favourite singers/bands to have easy access. Then you will find the second problem, i.e. in the playlists, all the songs are arranged not in album order, so cannot listen to just U2 - Joshua Tree for example. So yet another playlist for favourite albums etc etc etc. As you browse through the net you will find a few workarounds, but I wish that the interface would be fixed and soon. Scrolling is tedious if you have a large music library.

So that's the bad part. The good news is that it sounds great, as least on my logic 7 system with mp3 files at 320kbps and with original 128kbps AAC itunes store music. Much better than the AUX connection. I've tried playing the same ipod and same track on both and find the sound through the ipod interface o be much fuller with better bass reproduction whilethe AUX sounds not bad but tinny in comparison to the iPod interface. Do note that if you use poor MP3 files, the sound will be bad on both interfaces, so do spend a little time on getting your CD's properly transferred either into lossless format or 320kbps and you will be very happy, or else if you buy your MP3's from the pasar malam, you will find the sound to be very poor compared to normal CD's and then you will start missing your CD changer...

I mentioned at the start that this has been a frustrating experience for me. My frustration does not stem from the above points alone but also from the fact that BMW actually have a new solution to replace the current MOST iPod interface. This interface is known as the iPod USB interface with the product code 6FL. Essentially its a USB socket that appears together with the AUX IN socket in your arm rest. You will see a picture of it in your E92/93 car brochure under accessories. I asked for this option at time of purchase because I checked on the net and found that this option cannot be retrofitted as yet. The good thing about this 6FL interface is that it is much slicker on the idrive screen and options appear described properly as iPod, Artist, Playlist etc. instead of CD1, CD2 CD3 etc as it does on our current iPod interface. Unfortunately according to my sales rep, this option is not available for cars sent to Asia! I sent him the pdf copy of the iPod USB interface and quoted the product number ec, but still not possible.

The other advantage of the USB option is that it can take a standard thumbdrive or USB harddisk loaded with MP3 files as well, so you are not limited to just iPod's.

If you have not yet purchased your BM, do check if the option is now available. Othersie if you have to get the current iPod interface, then do be prepared to compromise on the numer of songs you can have on your iPod to make your scrolling easier.

Cheers!

Rajesh

Re: iPod Interface

Rajesh, when did you order your E93? I just ordered a E92 M3 with the 6FL option.

Unfortunately the PML SEs are sometimes quite blur and you need to press them to check properly or insist to talk with one of the product managers who are usually better informed.

The 6FL option is the way to go for those ordering a new car and want iPod integration as it allows for proper nagivation of the iPod via iDrive. Unfortunately it's not available via retrofit.

BTW, 6FL also allows for plugging in USB HD or thumbdrives

Re: iPod Interface

So, is it possible to retrofit 6FL? Anyone knows? Wonder how much that would cost...

Hi eggz,

I ordered the car in Oct 2007 and took delivery in March this year. The SE did say that he had forwarded my pdf files and other technical docs on 6FL to the product manager and he assured me that they will work on getting the 6FL option in asap as I raised a stink about false advertising in having the 6FL in the brochure but not providing the option to buyers. I told them that they should mark such options as Not Available at least. So, to be fair, the SE who was a decent bloke (who has since left and started his own biz. prob partially because of the aggro I caused him on this and other options I insisted on) did his best and sent a request to HQ as this is a factory installed option and got an official response from the factory floor that 6FL was not available for Jan 2008 e93 production vehicles slated for Asia Pac delivery. My e93 was a Jan 2008 production vehicle....so no 6FL and had to go for the dealer installed MOST interface.

The product manager expected first 6FL cars to come in mid-2008, so that's good news for all you guys booking one these days. So remember ASK FOR 6FL else you will get the current MOST option which still produces great audio but has a poorly executed user interface.

I am glad to hear that you have the 6FL option for your M3. Enjoy! And do post to let us know how it works. Would love to see it in action. I am also hearing rumbles on E90post.com about a possible retrofit option in the works and fingers crossed, will send in my car for a retrofit once confirmed as i understand that the retrofit is possible for 2008 production vehicles. No official confirmation though, so lets see...

Re: iPod Interface

Rajesh, that's interesting info, so you did press them all the way.....It's still surprising that they didn't allow 6FL for Jan 2008 builds, BMW advertised this 6FL option in mid 2007 if I'm not wrong.

Hopefully retrofit will be possible soon. It might involve a complete replacement of the head unit though. In fact the company I work for supplies chips for this new BMW head unit.

It doesn't sound compressed at all.... I am using a iPod Classic 80gb and using lossless (0 compression) format.... it sound as good as CD player....

Did you inquire from Alexander branch? The parts division sales guy always discourage client from buying any upgrade parts for our car.... strange.... once I inquire about the rear motorize blind and he also discourage saying no body bought before and they have no experience in installing etc.... really pissed me .... then I inquire the handbrake in aluminum finish likewise....

I don;t know the price of the iPod adapter.... I got mine free from PML....:)
KMOLTH and Nautilus: Thanks for your replies... I also didn't think the iPod interface would result in poorer sound quality - it's got to be better than the FM transmitter, and much better than the Aux input. I found the Aux input the worse than the FM transmitter as there's a lot of distortion.

Rather irritated at PML at the moment - they want $1k for the retrofit, yet when I ask whether there's any car which has this fitted that I can just test for myself, the answer is always "no", on top of discouraging the retrofit. They always take the path of least resistance - not what you would expect from a dealer of premium cars.

Maybe you can check with your car salesman if he can help with any discount? Well, Cyprus I stay around AMK ave 1 if you're around, you can PM me and we can arrange to have you hear and play with it..... :)

Yes. Pushed all the way. There is a seperate options list that is region specific as I understand it and 6FL while launched last year in the US was introduced in phases to other regions. I booked in October 07 and last changes to specs can only be made about 4 to 6 weeks before build. May have just missed the boat.

6FL retrofit seems like an expensive proposition if as you say, the headunit has to be replaced. May have to think twice then as the current interface is not too bad at all from an audio perspective.

Makes sense for PML to hold back on 6FL if we think about it from the dealers' perspective. The advent of factory fitted 6FL means the death of the dealer installed $1,000 retrofits that people are still getting. So the dealers still cling on...food for thought for those still seeking retrofits of the current (old) MOST iPod interface that PML still hawks to users today.

Re: iPod Interface

Kmolth, thanks for the kind offer. Am currently outstation, but might PM you next week or the week after. My salesman is from Performance Premium, so I guess after bargaining hard on the car price, they won't be trying to get me further discounts!

Thanks again...

Re: iPod Interface

no one with ipod adapter lobang to share? getting my first taste of the premium to pay for conti when i asked my SE how much PML charges for the ipod adapter. cost me only $180 on my rx8 with full control and charging. i thought premium could means twice the cost, wasn't expecting it to be 5-6 times more.
