intermittent electrical power loss

My car experienced simultaneous intermittent electrical power loss to the in dash display monitor, in dash CD changer, hifi system and aircon blower, a few seconds each time. Each time, these items will die together and re-initialise themselves after a while and everything is back to normal, only to recur again some other time.
There is no dimming or loss of power to the instrument cluster lights or to the engine / gearbox functions and no fault could be found on the check display.

As it is intermittent, I am sure the problem won't surface ( as always ) when I bring my car back to PML and may end up wasting time there...again.

Any ideas anyone?

Re: intermittent electrical power loss

your alternator going soon, had the same problem. it a first sign that your alternator cannot charge the whole car. had it replace at pml 4 1k include 2 years warranty and new battery. it more ex than outside. think second hand cost 400. while new cost 600 to 700 but no warranty.

Re: intermittent electrical power loss

You don't need to live with this kind of unreliability. Go bang tables at PML.
Which BMW model do you own? I understand some models, even in the new E90 (3-Series) and E60 (5-Series) are plagued with electrical problems, since Day-1.

Re: intermittent electrical power loss

PML diagnosed alternator dying and changed the alternator, under warranty. Took them 2 days though. My 730i is less then 2 years old and has only done 34k km.

Re: intermittent electrical power loss

Update. The car was fine for 3 days after changing a new alternator. For past 2 days, it developed same symptoms of intermittent electric power loss and in addition today, check messages and dashboard icons warning of DSC failure, Servotronic steering faliure, cruise control malfunction and autopark function failure. Lost power steering when driving.
Sent back to PML straight away and they are still trying to troubleshoot after 1 day...

Re: intermittent electrical power loss

Firewall? don't understand. The only electrical mods that I did on the car are

1. Hiop programming
2. Sprintbooster
3. EZstab

All were done long time ago and no problems until recently. Anyway, I don't think these mods would cause the problems I am facing now. An ex PML mechanic suggests that it maybe something to do with faulty power modules/control units. Hope they can nail the problem. Don't want to be going back to PML every few days. Any way, tried to ask for a courtesy car ( as this is the 2nd visit for the same problem ) but non available as expected. Did not want to create a scene, so I left it be.

Re: intermittent electrical power loss

that piece of barrier between the engine compartment and your console? thought that might ring a bell. did u remove all the mods and see if the problem still there?

dont scare me, cos mine mods same same leh.

Sorry lah, I think you will end up with the same fate.
Mod for what? If your car boh lat, can't chiong one, then upgrade to bigger engine man.
As the old saying goes: There is no replacement for displacement!

I personally don't believe in all these gizmos, change this thing here, upgrade to that electronic gadget there ... just to get +1 to 2 BHP. Pure BS!!!

Firstly, I do not know what you are talking about.
If you want to buy fake parts for your fake luxury car, then fake your BMW for all I care.
Mod all you want until your car stalls on the road too.
I will just grin when I pass by someone like you in that predicament.

And what has CASE got to do with all this?
What Q number?

I think you are one crazy bugger with a screw loose.

Re: intermittent electrical power loss

Update.

My car was at PML for 3 days.
Anyway, the hospitalisation cost PML ( or BMW? ) more then $4K ( car under warranty ). They changed the Nav computer and some resistors and even retrofit in an extra cooling fan to cool one of the control units in the boot area. Said that the problem was something to do with overheating of some electrical components. Just in case some may be wondering, I do not have extra electric load in my car like upgraded ICE, etc. Still waiting for another resistor to arrive from Germany.
Anyway, the car drives fine now for the past 2 days and am keeping fingers crossed. Thanks to Anwar, CSA at Kg Arang.

They gave me a E90 320i loaner for that period. I would say that the car was impressive and despite it being a base model, idles better then my 6 cylinder. Absolutely no vibrations on steering wheel at idle whereas steering vibes are the norm on the idling 730i. Very smooth and good low end torque when pulling as well.
IMO, I feel that it is a much nicer car to drive compared to the previous 2.2L even. Only gripe was the very thumpy ride because of the run flats.

Re: intermittent electrical power loss

Great that u managed to sort it out, hopefully. Keep us informed!

Cheers
