If you are poor, just too bad...

Re: If you are poor, just too bad...

Honestly, I am not so sure if I wanna see a extremely progressive tax system to fund a welfare structure. In US, the highest tax bracket is 35% and 45% for Australia and NZ.

Here we are paying 20%.

I wonder what is the solution for a low-tax-incident-yet-high-welfare system.

Cannot comment on US or NZ but the high bracket of tax in Auz... comes with free education (except Uni), free medical, no hidden vehicle tax (e.g. COE, ERP), etc... how ah ?

Here, I need to clarify. Medical in Australia is strictly speaking, "subsidized", not free. A lot of doctors (rightly) tag on a private fee payable - you want the best, you be prepared to pay. Medicare takes care of a standard AUD$40, but the private fee payable can be an additional $40 (for a good GP) or $200 (for a top specialist) - no kidding. It looks free on the surface, but it really isn't. Similarly, schooling isn't exactly free either. Public schools are free - but you are more likely to learn how to knife your neighbour, than you are going to learn trigonometry. Private schools - now, that fcuking costs an arm and a leg. Good ones (semi-private, ie. church-backed) can cost anywhere from AUD$10,000 to AUD$15,000 a year. Top ones (Sydney Grammar, Ascham Girls) can cost AUD$15,000 per semester, easy.

The only thing you got right bro, is no COE, ERP, ARF, but even then, they have a luxury tax & the equivalent of our CEV tax on cars - although you can drive your car till the fcuking wheels fall off.

45% taxes - I'll pass. I'd rather stick with my 20% and keep being an internet warrior here in Singapore.

Re: If you are poor, just too bad...

Comparing Sg to NZ, UK, Aust, US, Jap, France is just like apple to oranges. Most of these developed countries have net debt levels and account deficits greater than imaginable. Taxes in these countries are naturally high so that they can pay off debts in 1 generation rather than 3 or 4.

Sg is just somewhat different. Not only they tax individual low. They also tax corporate companies very low. They are not in need of money, but yet they just don't want to subsidise more to sick, poor and elderlies. I stressed 'more' because our closest counterpart Hong Kong is actually providing more welfares for these needy groups of people. Individual tax rate is almost the same as sg. Net wealth of country is about the same. So why can't sg gahmen do this? Can even be generous to the rich, leechy, evil corporations which we all hate but niao to needy citizens. Paradox no? Most needys are not asking for the sky, just abit more helping hand from authority can do wonders.

Sure everyone complains about vehicle taxes like COEs. Ever wonder where the fund goes to? Does it get channeled back to society? It is a zero sum game. But where is the other half of the equation that makes the sum zero? Definitely not monetary welfares of the poor and needys.

Re: If you are poor, just too bad...

Most parent companies keep agency costs low at their subsidiaries by doing a number of things - loading them with debt which keeps the guys on the ground busy and at the same time unlock shareholder value. How many here are debt free ?

I have never seen a company talk about better benefits for the employees. Employees' retirement is their puasa.

If everyone here is busy meeting ends meet then there would be no means for a political agenda. In this context - why is the gahmen suddenly interested in the asset rich aka those owns a piece of land in land scarce Singapore.

Opps ... Sorry we are talking about a country here. And Singapore is never run like a company.......

Re: If you are poor, just too bad...

Since this is a car forum...if we buy a car with 50k omv we have to pay another 62k arf and 80k coe. Thats 142k over a 10yr period which is 14.2k a year. Have not count the usage taxes yet.

So what our income tax is low...
