I thought you'll never ask.....

What is the point of the seat belt indicator on the instrument panel?

I don't know if all bimmers are like that but on mine, the indicator goes off a few seconds after I start the engine. If I remember correctly, my previous car was also like that.

Does the indicator only serves to remind the driver to belt up or does it serve a higher purpose?

I got curious after someone asked me the same question.

Re: I thought you'll never ask.....

Perhaps it is for countries where fastening your seat belt is mandatory. In America, the newer lots of cars are equipped with seat belt caution lights and chime(alarm sound). If you do not buckle up, it will sound out every 10 seconds, driving you MAD! Maybe that function is disabled for cars into Asia. Maybe?

Re: I thought you'll never ask.....

BMW drivers don't need to be nagged to put on their seat belt :)

Re: I thought you'll never ask.....

I read somewhere that nowadays, these seat belt chimes do count in the scoring for crash/safety evaluations, eg. euro ncap etc. i.e cars that don't have them can actually have points deducted even if they score well in the actual crash tests. So, most car manufacturers will just have them even though they are pretty irritating.

Aiyah... its there so that there are more things that can go wrong with you car... when that happens you need to service your car, hence spend more money at the dealer mah... hahaha

It happens in the Tucson too :furious:

Re: I thought you'll never ask.....

This is known as natural selection.

Smart people belt up, live longer, have kids, kids are born smart coz parents are smart. Stupid people dont belt up, die unnecessarily in accidents, dont have kids who are dumb, the overall IQ average of the world slowly increases.

This is how humanity progresses. So if you dont feel like belting up even if you're just turning the corner to the nearby store, just take it that any eventual death is simply part of natural selection making the world a better place to live in.

Re: I thought you'll never ask.....

When all the doors is shut, I have to turn round and tell all on board "Ooii... selt belt hor.. don't sabo me OK..." My old E36 no have this feature leh.. you all complaint for what... ?? *winkz*

Re: I thought you'll never ask.....

Which reminds me, there was a feature in Time magazine a few years ago about the dangers of not using a seat belt if your car has airbags.

Modern car safety systems have the airbags working in conjunction with seat belts, that is why airbags are sometimes called SRS, "Supplementary Restrain System". If an accident occurs, and the airbag is deployed, but the driver/passengers were not wearing seatbelts, the chances of death are much higher, even if the accident itself was not life threatening in the first place (i.e impact was not that bad, but the airbags deployed anyway). Basically both driver and passengers will have their faces blown apart by the airbag deployment system since the seat belt was not there to restrain them.

These days, there may be something in place such that if the seat belt is not on, the airbag system is not activated....but why take the risk?

maybe you should switch to riding...the only belt you have is around your waist...
then again, it goes to show that TPs put on slick shades so that others can't see what they are looking at.
maybe they were bio-ing your chick on the passenger seat, that's why never catch you.. :lol2:

but seriously, why take the risk with your own life?
If some of us can put up with seating on a bulging wallet while driving, what's there to complain about the seat belt?

the newer beemers have this warning if the seat belt is not put on, especially the 5-sereis and 6-series.
knn tak boleh tahan the warning sound. confirm the seat belt will be put on one. :)

tak boleh tahan is the word!

I used to remove the seat belt when I'm in the car park or on the small road leading to my house. But with the 6, I have to keep it on until I parked/stopped as the "tong", "tong", "tong" in quick succession drive me MAD

Maybe 1 day it will save my life, so let's change the habit a bit ...
