How often does the rotor require replacement?

My mech seem to suggest to me that it should be replaced every 3-4brake pad replacement cycles... True or just trying to sell me koyok?

I change the pads and rotors at the same time, every time...

I think you kena carrot-ed liao. Even every 2 pads = 1 rotor change is too much IMO.

So how often do you change your rotors?

I changed in PML and BVO. Both told me same thing, "rotor worn"..... was told that for stock pads and rotors, they wear each other out to achieve better braking effect....

1 set of brake pads can at least lasts more den a year?
if change 3 or 4 times brake pads den change rotor = 3 or 4 years change 1 time rotor
quite ok ah. should be like tat. rotor won't "eat up" so fast de.
1 yr around 20k to 25k unless u frequently drive up msia or thai den brake pads worn out faster.
oso depends on ur driving pattern, whether u always play brakes n jam brakes. :)

I do not think that rotor cycle is dependant on pad cycle.
Some pads bite more and wear rotors faster.

Take a closer look at the rotors when taken out.
There should be some stamping on the hat or at the circumfernce of the rotors.
The stamping will state the rotor's min thickness for use.

Best answer!

The only real way is to measure the rotor thickness unless there is warpage in the rotor.

yup, just try not to spray water to cool your rotor down when washing car to create that steamy affair. i haven't changed my rotor and pads for 2 years. hahaha. maybe thats why my handbrakes are not grippy.... then again, the mech kept telling me still got, still got. or maybe i seldom drive fast and seldom brake:D

Im not sure what kind of hand brake mechanism ur car uses. But for the sake of gaining 10 pts, I need to kaypoh abit....

Some car's hand brake are actually drum brakes.

The tension may be tightened by adjusting the springs, after removing the rear rotors at the
wheel hub; or adjusting the handbrake cable behind the handbrake lever.

These type of hand brake is independent from the "rotor + pad" system.

Re: How often does the rotor require replacement?

Brake pad is one thing that many motor shops can easily con new drivers to change. Not saying any particular shops just associated with BMWs. When I was driving JDMs, everytime I do oil change, the freaking shop will ask me to change spark plus and brake pad. Once I went to Jaybee for makan, the next door motor shop say...sir, yr pads must change liao, very thin already. i took a look n still got about 8mm thickness!

Re: How often does the rotor require replacement?

Do u guys have any brake pads which produces very little brake dust to recommend??

I just changed to Cool Carbon S/T pads. Still bedding it in. It is supposed to poduce alot less brake dust when compared to the original.

Re: How often does the rotor require replacement?

The stock discs and pads supplied by BMW usually wear at the same rate. (1x pad and 1x disc). The BMW specs for disc wear is 1.6mm. So if your car is equipped with 30mm thick discs, the minimum is 28.4mm. This thickness is recommended by the engineers to provide enough metal in the discs to store the heat energy caused by maximum speed braking without raising pad temps beyond thieir capability or fading.

The story takes on a different tune when you talk about different pad composition. Different pad composition will lead to different characteristics. But there is always a trade off. Some of the factors that are juxtaposed are as follows:

1. Pad Friction Coefficient
2. Pad wear
3. Disc Wear
4. Noise
5. Temp stability and resistance to fade
6. Cold bite performance
7. Production Cost
8. Dust

The combo that BMW chooses is a high friction compound that had lots of metal content to increase friction and provide temp stability. Their draw back is the famous brake dust and terrific rotor wear. But the car sure stops.

Cheers

Re: How often does the rotor require replacement?

if we already change to aftermarket rotors + brake pads (mix-n-match), what is the "indicator" is time to change ?
as ABD said, each time send car for service, the shop will say ... ehh ... your brake rotor or pad "seems" need to change liao !

Re: How often does the rotor require replacement?

cool carbon pads with OEM caliper ? got click-clack sound or not ? :D

Re: How often does the rotor require replacement?

how about resurfacing the rotors?

When you change discs, the manufacturer will not want to undertake any liabilities. So they stamp on the same wear rates. As for the pads, any thickness below 3mm is starting to get iffy... So try and keep pads thicker than that.

For Brembo aftermarket rotor (OEM size), there is a minimum thickness marker on the rotor.

I think you mean skim the rotors. As mentioned, the stock wear rates is 1.6mm. That means 0.8mm on the outside surface and another 0.8mm on the inside. That is not much metal. skimming is only good for fairly new discs that have developed a slight warp due to negligence. 0.8mm is not a lot of metal....

I do know of engineering workshops that can rebuild metal parts through arc sputtering to deposit new metal back onto old metals. But the cost ain't worth the time and effort. These shops re-build ship parts. Think of engine valves the size of a man.
