Re: How do you find BMW's SatNav ?
After using various variants of the VDO Siemens /Harman group Satnav (OEM), and also Garmin aftermarket, my comments are:
The maps on the OEM are sufficient, but not stellar in detail.
The OEM satnav refresh is very long cycle, and certain changes in roads in Malaysia, and to a lesser extent, Singapore, not reflected. Will cause severe issues in KL at least.
Some OEM systems are integrated with a gyro system which, in the absence of a satellite signal, will track manually the movement of your car together with ECU sensor data for quite a long time (5km?) with a good degree of accuracy, in order to make sure you don't get the dreaded `lost satellite reception' and LOCKUP issue you get with most aftermarket system without gyros.
The Garmin 276C and Nuvi 6XX series can use free maps, legally, from
GPS Maps of Malaysia & Singapore
The malsingmap maps are stellar in detail and has routing
They are updated very regularly and almost everything is there, including points of interest for bak kut teh etc. EVERYTHING!
If you go to Australia, USA., UK, etc. you can get free maps too, just take your NUVI / 276C along and you're in business immediately. I travel and drive a lot, and these are invaluable.
ALL IN ALL, i will forgo the OEM GPS and spend a thousand bucks or less on an aftermarket Garmin 660 or Garmin 276C (for tracking and contribution to Malsingmaps).
