Hamann 18' rims

My E34 1995 530i is fitted with a set of Hamann 18' rims and it really suits the car perfectly giving it a very classic stylish look.

However there is one big problem, it vibrates profusely between 80 - 100 km/h, then it gets slightly better between 100 - 140 km/h and again vibrates after 140 km/h and I didn't dare push car faster. During those speeds, it will get worst, sending whole car vibrating if I press on the brakes.

I have checked all break disks and also done (many times) balancing of all 4 wheels, and I'm really worried that if problem cannot be solved then I will be forced to use the original 15' rims which does not vibrates, but will make the car looks very dull. :uhhh:
Please advise if there is anything else I can/need to do to solve the problem, thanks!

Re: Hamann 18' rims

1) Check tyres
2) Check suspension components
3) Do a high speed wheel balance

Re: Hamann 18' rims

Thanks for your reply.

Tires in 70% condition,
My workshop said suspension is still good.
What's a high speed balancing? Different from the normal balancing where they put the wheels on a rotating machines?

But when I tried driving with the 15' rims, no vibration at all, think problem must be with the rims?

I may be wrong but am guessing it could be either centrebore or offset issue......Does the 18" rim have the correct centrebore for your E34? Are you also running spacers?

For either of these you would need to get hubcentric rings with correct the centrebore and hubcentric spacers to correct the rim offset.

Hub center diametre: 72.5 mm
Number of bolts: 5
Pattern: 120 mm
Offset (ET): 20mm

Also, this guy seems to have the same problem as you:

1990 525i e34 vibration / shaking at around 80km/h (50mph) 225/60R15 wheels from e39 - bimmerfest - BMW Forums

hope you can find some answers and do keep this thread updated!

Good Luck

Re: Hamann 18' rims

Hi Ninja, I've told myself that I will be going ALL OUT to sort out the vibration problem. As Hamann specialized in making rims for BMW, it just can't be that simple that the rims does not suit my car. Anyway thanks a lot for the valuable info, I shall do some research and keep you posted on the outcome.

Re: Hamann 18' rims

I tried rotating the wheels around, having the best condition rims to put in the front and the vibrating had stop not completely but at least 70-80%. However, I will still need to get a set of Hubcenter Rings to further improve the performance.
Any kind bro know of any parts dealer in Singapore whom carry parts (Hubcenter Rings) for the E34?

Ps: I can't get much of BMW parts in Batam, HAIzzzzzzz:uhhh:

Re: Hamann 18' rims

Glad to be of help.

Centering/hub centric rings are usually sold with certain rims for various car's applications. If its really the centering ring issue, I think you will need to know the centerbore spec for you current rim so that can buy/et one made to fit in with E34 centercore. So, do find out as much about your current rim as possible in terms of this.

Locally, I was once at Hurry Tires few years back and was told they could custom machine them, but you need to give a call to check again. Their contact is in the Resources folder.

No harm trying, I guess you could also check out Tirerack.com, they may be able to help as they carry various rims and may have a set of hubcentric rings for your particular rim application.

Good Luck!

Re: Hamann 18' rims

Hi Ninja, BIG thank you for the valuable info.
FYI, I'm using the Hamann hm2's 18' rims, hope Hurry Tires knows this model so that I don't have to run around Sg looking for those rings...

Re: Hamann 18' rims

Thanks Ninja for the info, I went to Hurry last Sat and bought the hubcenter rings from Mr. Tan (think he's the boss there).
Just had them fitted and it works (well almost). Was driving till 140km/h and almost zero vibration, but still have vibration problem (but very much improved) when I hit the brakes. My workshop told me that my rims are slightly bent, well it's common thing here considering the rough/bad road conditions in Batam. Think I will live with it for the time being.
My problem is 90% fixed now and thanks to all who help advised me on this issue. :)

High Speed balancing should eradicate your last problems. Get your mechanic to do it. Its only done on your front pair of wheels.

Re: Hamann 18' rims
