Hey guys I interested to install some sort of GPS system into my car - yes I do get disorientated in .sg!!!!!! I however not sure which option to take, there is the PDA based, portable car base, and indash type. I would like to hear comments; is it any good, useful, cost, pros n cons etc. Thanks

Re: Gps

my fren tried in germany...and it work wonders. But honestly i dont think u need it in Singapore. Another fren driving 5series told me PML would charge $9k to fix one..not sure i hear correctly. Basically even if it costs half elsewhere...u can buy a lifetime supply of street indexes...

Re: Gps

Better off getting the PDA type or TIBO. More mobile. Can bring to your next ride.

Re: Gps

Yes I am thinking of a PDA based. The TIPO works on PPC OS but for that kind money, I can get a PDA and use the other functions as well... yes......????

So I figure I have narrowed down to a PDA cause of the 'true' portability, and I can take it overseas, use in wife's car, friends car... etc...

so the next setp is anyone with PDA GPS to share experience and also, which PDA platform is better? Palm or PPC???

Comments, thoughts anyone?

Re: Gps

I recently bought a Garmin Quest from US, cost me in total S$650. For detail, please see http://www.garmin.com/products/quest/

From my short ownership experience, a GPS is as good as the map you get and the software that drives the map. For Garmin, it is actually one of the best around. The interesting thing is that there is a group of GPS enthusiasts in Singapore and Malaysia, who will regularly update the map so that all changes in our road network get reflected in the map. Case in point, the newly open AYE/Queensway exit, it is already reflected in the map .. for detail, again, take a look at http://malsingmaps.com/index.php

I believe you could get a bluetooth GPS receiver and have it hooked up to a PDA, I would strongly suggest that you investigate into how often your map will be updated, you certainly do not want to be stuck with a GPS with no way to update your map.

Just one 2 cents.

Re: Gps

No, those maps are freely distributed by the enthusiasts. Plus I think the mapper must be a foodie as most of the popular eating places are clearly marked.

Also, very useful is that highway speedcam are all marked with the speed limit clearly indicated.

One thing you got to know though, the maps does not indicate HDB block numbers, which can be useful for some situation, however, after using the Garmin and the map for couple of weeks, I do not see the needs for it anymore and I feel it may just cluttered the map.

Re: Gps

Have you used the Quest to go to KL? How do you load the maps to the unit, by USB?

Re: Gps

which ever option you take, the price you finally pay will determine the quality and detail level of the map.... and also usability when you're driving... if you drive and get lost, your choice needs to be able to reroute quickly and advise you of an alternate route or how to get back on track...

I have not used it in KL, in fact, I have not visited KL for the past many years. However, if you visit the website I included in my previous post, you will find a forum where people discuss about the use of the map for many parts of Malaysia.

Garmin included the MapSource software with the Quest unit, this MapSource software allow you to view the map on your PC, marked waypoints, do routing, etc .. it also allows you to select area within a map (for example, the whole of US is very large and may not fit into your GPS due to limitation in the built-in memory) and load it to your GPS unit. This is done via the included USB cable. Very intuitive, very easy.

My Garmin Quest comes with the whole US map since I bought it in the US, when I go for my next trip there at the end of the year, I will definitely try it out.

You just hit the nail in the head. In fact, not all maps are routable according to my limited understanding.

I test my unit many times, for example, I know the shortest way to go from home to work. I would get my GPS to route for me and purposely make a wrong turn to see what the unit would do. So far, 100% of the time it is recalculating within seconds of realising I am heading in the wrong direction and most times, it would be able to find the nearest U turn and tell me to make a turn. Very reassuring ..

Re: Gps

sometimes it tries too hard to reroute you back to the original track? did you ever encounter this? i mean like if there was a traffic jam... i'll make a different turn ... and the dang thing keeps rerouting you back to the original route... until like maybe it decides your current location is nearer than its original route then i'll stop and reroute you via a different route...

It would do that and tell you 'please proceed on the planned route' liek telling you....dun act smart

but after you ignore her for a while, she would then reroute you liao...if yours does not...hmmmm..she has character :lol2:

Re: Gps

live traffic? that will need radio stations to incorporate data into the gps receiver. like in japan....that is cool, in singapore, i doubt.
