Hi besides PML does any other workshop retrofit the GPS Navigation unit with the On-Board Monitor for e38.

PML is quoting 9k

thanks

I'll rather you buy a PDA and a GPS reciever which cost less then 1000 and yet more detailed then the Germans interface.

Can any PDA do that? Or only particular ones?

That does'nt sound too bad.... Is it a hassle to install the GPS receiver?

Nope ... basically what you do is buy yourself a PDA holder, Bluetooth GPS Reciever and Kingmap 2 (Singapore) thats about it.

PDA sits on the holder where ever you want it to be, the bluetooth device can be situated anywhere as long there is line of sight with the sky. Thats about it.

I tried a friends not very good, actually iam more keen on the multimedia
I have a VDO GPS/Pioneer DVD in-dash form my previous car but unfortunate unable to fit into the 728.

hmm... thats some serious wiring job. Because your Reciever requires power as well as "Line of Sight" with the sky. So I'm not sure how they are going to acomplish that...

Actually adding the GPS witha LCD screen is no prob but i am trying to connect to my Factory HU to use the the InDash bc in the 7 there is a Casstte Player that is Single Din.

PDA GPS is very compact and portable (meaning good if you have more than one car, or even when riding on a bicycle) but the only downside is the initialisation process. takes about 1 to 1.5 minutes for you to set up and initialise and input destination before you can drive off.

gps receiver needs about half minute to warm up.

Hello hello!

Other than Kingmap 2, you can also try RoadPilot, there is a review here http://www.ppcsg.com/pages.php?page=Road+Pilot+Pro

OR if you have a GPS navigation device, you can download from ISMAP for free at http://www.ismap.com/adefault.htm on the left hand side you'll see a download option for your PDA.

I've only read about them but didn't try them out so please don't flame me :naughty:

Road pilot's Interface isn't as great as Kingmap 2. They don't display alot of road names while on the move, which requires you to click on them. So basically what you see are a bunch of nameless lines. ]

Kingmap 2 indicate road names as well as differentiate between normal road or expressway way. You are able to plot a route and have the map show you the way there with a video.

I just reckon PDA can have multiple task. Its a PDA first of all where you can use it for office related, and its a GPS.

Most GPS reciever itself does not require 30 seconds. It usually takes longer upon "1st connection" of the day. From experience I would say 2-4 mins. This provided you are in Line of Sight with the sky. Even then sometimes in crowded CBD area it might affect the signal but so far I haven't experienced a single lost of signal.

Usually what I do is make the connection and input start and end route, and drive off. Even though you input your original start point, the GPS will automatically detect your current location and re-plan. If you miss a turn for some reason, the Map will detect a change and automatically re-route for you in less then 2 seconds. So I would say its pretty handsfree.

Re: GPS Navigation

Has anyone retrofitted the GPS navigation from PML on their i-drive before? I'm currently driving a 3 months old 520i and thinking of retrofitting one at PML. Does anyone knows how much it cost and if it's good?

Please advise.

how much does that cost? 8k at least?

Closer to $10k, I think it's crazy, imagine the amount of mods you can have for $10k, better to get a 3rd party nav unit, for less than $1000. Spend the rest of the money on a nice holiday....

Re: GPS Navigation

There are so many other alternatives. Garmin etc... Plus the maps can be found at the Subaru club's pages.
