For what it's worth, I did this last year ... Milan to the Cinque Terre and the Italian Riviera, then through Tuscany and all the way down to the Amalfi Coast.
Brought a GPS but somehow it wouldn't work. Ended up doing everything by Michelin road map.
Fantastic. Never got lost (except in the Milan airport car park haha). In fact, think we saw more cos we tried out different routes to places rather than the direct ones, and in Tuscany the longer and more winding roads are the ones with the spectacular views.
Italy's really easy to get around with or without GPS. Have fun.
