Fuel Consumption Needle Not Obedient

Hi guys,

Gotten my 318 sports a mth back. Recently, noticed that whenever I slow down by letting go of the gas pedal, the fuel consumption needle will almost always rise to the 20l/km reading before falling back to almost zero. Is that normal?

Appreciate all your advice pls...

Thanks
David

mine behave that way too, but not always to the 20l/km

Its fine, everytime you step on the gas, u will be moving the needle to the right and eveeytime u let go, it moves to the left!

Cheers and welcome to the forum!

Davidwee,

it's normal. When slowing down, it will move to right right (20L/100km), before settling back to the left (0L/100km).

Which means the "consumption" meter is purely electronic, and not just a vacuum gauge like the older models (think MB...)

Mine is a E39....

When car is not engaged (at P position) and when I step on accelerator, the fuel consumption needed still remain at zero (even though I rev to 4,000 rpm or more). Needle only moves when I drive off..

Is this normal ?

Wah...like that called not obedient ah?! Nabei! Then mine is sibei unfilial lor! Whether or not I hit the throttle, consumption still registers "HIGH" !!
kekekeke!!!

Arsony
Topaz Blue NOT obedient...

Bleah... this few days, my consumption needle was always "stuck" on high!! Max out at 300km before amber light came on for me to refuel... Jialat! :wavey:

wah, how come like that??

Hehe,

Me too.....approaching the 2000km mark. After this, going to step the gas real hard to see how the ride perform :)

Had the chance to drive the car like mad during CNY.

the fuel consumption needle for the bmw or the old-generation merc still rely on the same mechanism. At idle, the needle wrongly still shows max fuel consumption. The only difference is that at speeds below 10kmh, the signal is cut off for our bmw and the needle falls back to zero. this is to prevent the wrong reading of max fuel consumption during idle, like those old merc. this also explains why it starts to shoot up to max as you slow down, and then falls back to zero (coz you just crossed the 10kmh mark). and also explains why fuel consumption remains at 0 when you rev in neutral (which is obviously wrong) since at neutral your speed is 0kmh.

if at cruising speed, you shift to neutral and rev, the needle should move as expected.
