Re: engine sub-frame

Heard of engine mounting, engine cross member but never a sub-frame. Are you referring to the cross member? If so it is located in the front axle where all the parts such as steering column, rack and pinion, hoses, mountings, attachements are screwed onto the cross member... I think.

Re: engine sub-frame

The sub frame is a 1 pc frame that attaches all the suspension arms and steering rods together. The entire sub frame is mounted to the chassis with a few more mountings. The benefits are less NVH transmitted into the cabin. The sub frame also mounts the arms on a more solid base. Previous hondas used to have a little strut placed between the rear suspension arms that you could see below the car from the rear. The strut was to keep the mountings from moving and in this respect also lessened the movement of the suspension bushings too. The BMW E46 frount sub frame is a flat grey metal thing below the front of the car that is just below the engine oil pan.

This will explain it. Rear sub frame of a E46 3 series.
