hey people, i just got my car last friday and the petrol consumption is already worrying me, averaging about 8km/l. official figure stated is about 12km/l.
is this normal while the car is running in, or is my consumption going to stick? i'm really not sure, as this is my first car.
please advise. thanks so much.

I'm doing around 9.0 km/l for about 8000km of mileage. Lots of urban driving.

Managed to hit 11.2 km/l once on NSH, usually averaging about 10.8 km/l over there.

Just a bit on driving habits, i dun use Sports mode unless in NSH.

i think your bmws depreciate a lot more in the first year than how you drive to save $ on petrol .... since already bought the car drive and enjoy it!

If its a brand new BMW, one would loose already $20k at least the first year.... $1666.67
per month ? wack the paddle and incur another $120 more on petrol every month? the additional petrol is 7.2% of your estimated monthly depreciation in your first year.

i'm not suggesting that we should waste petrol and polute the earth, but just drive your car that you can best enjoy it for the est $1666.67 your already loosing every month on the value of the car! drive or not, every month also losing money!

Yeah, don have to worry too much on fuel consumption. My last tank, I topped up about 61litres and I only travelled 510km. only 8.36km/litre. Let me help to put things in perspective for you.

1) Previously I was working in tuas and I stay in serangoon. Everyday I use 85% highways and I got very good consumption for my civic 2.0. Up to 13.6km/litre. I travel around alot everyday, clocking 180km per day on average. 3 to 4days top up one full tank. for a 2litre car, 13.6km/litre is fantastic. But due to high usage, my petrol bills are around 900++per month.

2) Now I am working at Eunos aree and I still stay in serangoon. Due to promotion, I need not travel so much, my guys will travel instead. So I do 85% city driving everyday. I'm getting an avg of 8 to 9km/litre every tank for my E90 320. Consumption much worse right? But now I only spend an avg of 400 to 500 bucks per month on petrol. So for me its much better than previously liao so I am happy bout it.

So when ppl talk about fuel consumption in terms of km/litre, this always sets me thinking, this is not the only thing you have to consider, you have to consider your usage as well. Hope I have given you a further insight of things. Thanks and my apologies for the long winded post. :)

My OBC said, 9.1KM/L. I've not reset it since day one I got the car. Mine is a E90320i.

if you want a more accurate picture, reset it each time u fill up your full tank.... at the end of the tank, you'll have a more accurate picture from the OBC reading

depends what tyre profiles u using. if 320 stock ones...100% city driving 9+ km/l is achievable...broaden to 225s...8+ is normal.

good news for u...manual states min petrol grade 91 RON...so go do 92s now

hey all, thanks so much for the advices. have calmed my nerves somewhat. just worried that the car is guzzling petrol like drinking water. cheers!

just another stupid question. how do i reset the trip mileage? been trying to figure out how to do it since morning. thanks!

BMWs have never been known to be frugal on petrol. If u can get between 9 to 10 km/litre for the 320i, it wld be pretty acceptable. I am getting 6.75km/litre (using manual calculation and not OBC reading) on a 335 sedan with mainly 80% street driving.:(

The BMW drinks most heavilly in stop start traffic and short distance trips. If you correlate your FC with the Average speed reading on the OBC you'll see that folks with higher Ave speed have better FC. Moral of the story, drive faster!

to reset your mpg meter, on the left stalk ... click the button on the tip until you see the litres/km or km/litre figure... then hold down the button until you see it turn to zero

like someone said, its the start & stop causes the the high fuel consumption afterall the e90 sedan is about 1.5 tonnes

maybe it helps at some point if you're using a more powerful engine, since the engine doesnt need to work harder to move the car from stationary position thus maybe more fuel efficient.

for every 55 litres, I get only about 380 to 400km on a 323 sedan - 90% city driving

doesn't really affect much even if i try to be light footed, at least I don't see a noticeable difference. but there is a major difference once I do a lot of highway travelling off peak hours

I'm also suffering the same fc. abt 8 km/l. 95% city driving.

140 km per quarter tank.

I was previously driving a Sonata doing abt 10 km/l till recently when the car is 4 years old fc dropped to 8.5 to 9 km/l.

Thought change to new car will have better fc but turn out to be worse....

Just for comparison ...... getting the following figures for the FL E60 523LCi.

City driving in Spore (90% non expressway and often full trottle : ) = 8.2km/L
NS Hwy up Msia = 11.1km/L

Yr 8km/l very good already !

Mines real bad, getting 6.2-6.7km/l..

70%city / 20% traffic lights/ 10% highway

No spare tyre in boot somemore..

My OBC is reading 6.9 so you don't have to worry. It depends on driving style and also on whether city or highway driving. I think that if you idle with the enging running is also bad for the reading. Initially I was also concerned but now - who cares?

E90 325i
OBC 9.1, about 550~600 for 55litres, 50/50 city/highway

as with others, start/stop traffic is the killer... trick is to move off really slowly.
Power to weight is also impt... heard that the E60 530 also quite good FC

I'm getting 7 to 11 Km/L for E90 330i depending on how hard I rev the car. If you drive like a tortoise, you can get exceptional mileage for your car! :)

I get about 9 Km/L for my Z4 2.5Si
Thought that larger engines will have poorer FC but not so... it's to do with weight of car + effort of engine required to pull it. 2.5L uses more fuel for similar revs but then uses less revs to get car up to speed c.f. 2.0L.

As confirmed by many here, realized that gunning it at the lights is the worst for FC, more so than hard overtaking on highway.
But then again fuel costs are low compared to car price so enjoy lah.

One more thing... don't compare with the figures in the brochure 'cos they use a fixed circuit with unique driving style that reviewers have admitted does not reflect real world driving. Unless you have a very very light foot and don't stop frequently at traffic lights that take forvever to change colour, it is impossible to come close.

Living in Stevens, working in Tanjong Pagar and shopping in Holland V. So you can imagine its almost 95% city driving. 7.6km/liter. :screwedu: Hardly change and my mileage now is 9000 km.

Enjoy the ride....and forget about FC. :)

On the other hand, I hope to see a Hybrid model like the Toyota Prius. :juggle: Imagine using electric drive 95% of the time for me? The battery probably died before I used up the full tank. Ha ha....:nehnehhh:
