Good idea...but now i m back to stock !! The reason i started this thread is to compile a list of speakers that we used, not for review purposes but more bcos the shallow mounting depth is posing limitations for the brand and model of speakers we can used without any mod to the door panel. THen the Admin can sticky'd the list for newcomers.

Back to your suggestion, i certainly dont mind since i m kinda redoing my ICE. :)

Cool, let's do it toward the coming weekend, say at North Bridge Rd and Tan Kaui Lan St. where the apple strudel place is. The big carpart there should accomodate quite a few cars and thousands of watts.

Re: Unofficial speakers survey

Seas Lotus Reference in front
Seas Lotus Performance in the rear
Seas Lotus Reference 12" Sub x 2.

Both front and rear are 6.5"... No problemo.

Re: Unofficial speakers survey

I'm driving a E46 coupe. The mid range space is limited - because the original fitment is to mound the speaker on the door panel. This is a no-no if you really want good sound quality. The speakers should mounted to the sturdy metal door frame...

if you allow, I will post some pics on how its done.

The thing is... the door panel has a speaker grille and molding that hugs the speaker so closely. It looks difficult to get a decent good quality speaker in. But not true, it can be done.

On the inside, you see that BMW has a depression there to accomodate the speaker magnet. BUT SO WAT? This metal piece is blocking the speaker! The speaker needs to drive into the door cavity so that the door becomes a good speaker enclosure!

CIMG1644a.jpg

So we cut it away!!! Note, BMW has a reinforcement pillar just behind. You need a good installer to control the cutting depth! Again, the idea of cutting the metal is not for the speaker to sit inside the door space, but to allow it the speaker to use the door as its speaker enclosure.

CIMG1654a.jpg

So how to fit the speaker? You need to fabricate a spacer ring... hard work coz you have to use several layers of MDF to get the proper thickness.

So it can be mounted swee swee.

CIMG1670a.jpg

And make sure the spacer sits snugly, with no air leaks at the sides. This is important if you want your speakers to pump decent bass.

A point to note... BMW has nice nice foam covering up the door panel - as opposed to cheap plastic sheet seen in Jap cars. But nice foam or not, it doesn't give insulation, it doesn't seal the door for a proper enclosure.

Rip it off, and do a proper soundproofing...

Now you owe me coffee huh. Hahaha

Re: Unofficial speakers survey

i m glad someone driving a bimmer has done wat u've done. My previous spkrs were attached to the door panel, and u are so right...when the midbass kicks in...vibration !
So obviously the next best option is to cut the door itself so that the choices of speakers increase. but thats still not the best solution as u mention cos its still attached to the door and that wil still cause vibration. also, many wouldnt dare to get their doors cut cos of fear of leakage, which one guy here experienced.

way to go iceman ..! u DIY or ??

btw, i post another thread asking for u to comment on using H701 with stock HU lei ?
i will ask u during meetup i guess..

bro, the many many ?? is to satisfy the 30 characters...

ya la..i thought SAm doing up his car, but i think he's busy with CommunicAsia or something..

Re: Unofficial speakers survey

Ice Man..

after u cut the door...

Qn 1 how do u mount the spacers on the door itself ? Screw on ? Did u use silicon as suggest to seal any air leakage ?

qn 2. The support bar seen in the pic wouldnt be disturbed right ? So has the mounting depth limitation been solved ?

Cool, I like your style.

Yeah yeah I would be busy talking to show babes and collecting freebies too, but still can make it back before 7pm.

No lah, I don't have the tools to DIY. I go to my installer, and camp out there to work with them from top to bottom... I can contribute the ideas and theory, but nevertheless like all these fancy cutting, carpentry etc, it takes skilled hands, which comes from years of practice... of which I won't have! I don't believe in leaving the whole job to the installer - with ultra high demands on how it should sound super perfect... rather I will try to brainstorm on the spot at each situation, and everyone benefits from the experience.

The cutting of the door doesn't give you a lot more mounting depth, it just gives your mid range an avenue to 'pump' into the door cavity.

1. The spacers are screwed onto the metal frame - using some very long screws... Yes, some silicon will do, or you can use hot glue. If the fit is really tight, you don't really need silicon lah.

2. No, cannot disturb the support bar... mounting depth limit is sort of solved, not by the cutting of the metal, but rather the mounting of the speaker on the metal frame, instead of the door panel actually moves the speaker backwards a few mm... and in most situations, that's all the difference you need.

Actually I did photograph and charter each step with notes, from start to finish... this front door thingy is like a fraction of the whole blog... but I ended up with so many special situations and details that now I find to hard to make one complete posting in it... hahah

I agree on the DIY part. Leave it to the seasoned campaigners :)

more questions though... dont mind share your experience ya..

By mounting on the door itself, it doesnt really give you more room, altho a few mm is all that matters sometimes, do u know wats the max mounting depth it allows after cutting ? This will impact on the speakers we can choose. Perhaps u can share your speakers mounting depth as a benchmark ?

SEcondly, any problem with leakage etc ?

And of cos ...where did u do it..and how much for labour u know ? (u may prefer to PM for this..)

thanks dude... would like to listen to your SEas lotus..heard alot about it. BUt am eyeing the revelators hehe..
