E46 dropped + new shoes

Hi folks

Just thought I’d share some pics and info of my recent suspension + rims mod on my FL E46 320. I’ve read and learnt much from this very informative forum so I thought should contribute as well. Its not a big deal or as ‘hardcore’ as some of the featured rides here, so please bear with me if it bores you, haha.

As with everybody else I wanted to get rid of some fender gap and the OEM 16” style 45 rims that came bone stock. I was looking for something that offered a moderate drop (especially the rear) not slammed and with a firmer/stiffer ride without sacrificing too much comfort (wife and kid sits in the rear mostly). Just normal daily driving and I don’t track.

Considered a few options ranging from pairing Eibach or UUC springs with new OEM shocks (most economical but shocks wear prematurely) to BC Coilovers (not a trackkie so dun need adjustability) to Koni FSDs (costly). I had Bilsteins on my previous E30 and liked the handling, comfort was still acceptable given the rawness of the E30 chasis. So I figured that generally Bilsteins would be ok on the more ‘refined’ E46.

So I searched and ploughed thru the various forums and sites on Bilsteins, went with my gut feel and finally decided on the Bilstein B12 Tuning Kit (product code : SE5-B633). Suits me well in terms of lowering height and budget - got it brand new at $1.1K.

The B12 is a full suspension kit comprising of pretuned lowering springs (made by H&R to Bilstein specs) matched with uprated shock absorbers. Lowers 35mm front and 20mm rear, same drop as the H&R Sports springs offering a slight ‘raked’ look. Also learned from E46Fanatics that H&R/Bilstein is a popular and proven combi, just that they get the springs and shocks separately and not in a complete kit like the B12.

yellow + blue = my favourite colours :)

Its been installed almost a week now and will wait another week for wheel alignment. The immediate difference in handling and how the car felt was really apparent. Feels tighter, especially going over bumps felt much more firm and less vibration/bounce, yet not too harsh. The front wheel gap is now down from stock 4 fingers gap to a tight 2 fingers. At the rear, somehow its remained relatively unchanged at 2 finger gap. I think its due to the fact that my previous rear shocks were due for change and already sitting quite low, so maybe the drop is not that visible. I think stock height for rear is around 3 fingers? New rear mounts were installed and according to BVO that could also push the rear up slightly plus some settling would occur a bit after more driving.

Some pics after install:

Pretty happy with the result :)

As for rims, after reading all the recommendations here, I dropped by Ray-S last week and got 18” CSL replicas with offset of ET40….I just love the way they look! Don’t have the weight but would say its almost similar to the OEM 16s. Wrapped them with new Eagle F1-GSD3s, 225/40/18s all round. After some neg, damage came to $1.7K. Sounds like good value to me. :)

Also, I have recently noticed/heard some minute creaking noises, at very low speed going over humps, coming from the rear. It sounds the springs been wound too tight. Is this normal as new springs settle/compress? Or is this related to some other parts eg bushings etc. that I should get checked/replaced as well.

Does anyone here have the same suspension setup or know anyone with it? Would like to hear your views as well. Appreciate your feedback…….hope you enjoyed the pics!

Cheers

Re: E46 dropped + new shoes

225/40/18s?

i thought should be 245 or bigger? my back rim 17" already 245. and your tyres look thick. sorry very blur when it comes to rims and tyres.

Actually, you can choose to run a number of sizes depending on your own personal needs. Ninja chose to run a non-staggered setup, which means all his tyres are of the same size, which I feel is a good decision. Our cars don't make enough power to warrant any reasons pertaining to functionality. Maybe if your putting out 350bhp, then yes, you may need the extra traction for launches.

A 320i only puts out 170bhp, so no need lah. If you do it, it's really for cosmetic purposes. All the sports editions comes with a staggered setup, like yours. It's really for cosmetic purposes. If you like understeer, it gives you plenty of that too.

Many things can give the illusion of thick tyres, especially viewed from the side. Offset, rim width, tyre sidewall shape...etc. So you can't really judge by just looking at it.

I'm on 19"s and my tyre size is only 235/35/19. So to each his own.

Re: E46 dropped + new shoes

Nice drop, Ninja. Can I suggest a drop of another finger or two at the rear? Just playing the devil's advocate here.......

You are running staggered and your rear rim is wider than your front rim, that's why. Dun try to rotate tyres in your case hor:lol2:

Re: E46 dropped + new shoes

Thanks guys for the kind words...waited too long to do this, should have done it much earlier ! :)

Kentonna : I think 2 more fingers drop at the rear would be too much for me when loaded. Now its just nice when loaded! :) Hopefully when it settles in more it will eventually hit 1.5 fingers, then that'll be perfect. Looking at Chickenbackside's ride it does seem to have dropped a bit more. Thanks anyways for suggesting.

Hi hitmee,

Yes, Chickenbackside is right. I chose to go non-staggered 18 x 8.5J all round mainly cos I think it'll be good to be able to rotate the tires. Apart from maybe looking a bit better with 9.5J rims, I doubt I would need that extra contact patch anyways.

If you go onto some of the tire calculator sites available on the web its also about maintaining a certain difference in rolling diameter from stock. Basically, when you upsize you should try and maintain diameter diff between stock and new by max. 3%.

So,

205/55/16 overall diameter = 631.63mm (STOCK SIZE)

Comparisons :

225/40/18 overall diameter = 637.03mm (diff of only 0.84% which is acceptable)

245/40/18 overall diameter = 653.03mm (diff of 3.27% which is too high)

You probably have on your OEM 17" M68 rims :

245/40/17 overall diameter = 627.63mm (diff of 0.65% which is acceptable)

That's why I chose to go 225/40/18. Hope this helps. :)

Cheers!

It has indeed dropped noticeably since the first day. The installation of ICE also brought the rear down a bit. So just wait a while for it to settle down.

Wah, if the tyre shop really did that for you, maybe you should stop going there. They should be knowlegeable enough to tell you cannot rotate.

Whether you can run 235 or 245 depends on you rim width. Generic 18" rim widths can run either safely.

Re: E46 dropped + new shoes

235/40/18 overall diameter = 645.16mm (diff of 2.14% which is still acceptable).

Try : http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

225 for 7 to 9.5J rims
235 or 245 - 8 to 9.5J rims.

But do remember that it also depends on the offset of the rims you choose.

Search for that thread started not too long ago on the 'widest tire to fit E46' or something like that....very informative.
