Hi everyone.

just rid myself of a Suzuki GTi and brought a E36 320i manual
Is it just me .. but the car is extremely slow off the line compared to my Gti. but once it is on the highway it is cruising ......
i'm sure it is just me.. but any comments !!!?????

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

Bro,

Its a little of both. You have an added 700cc but at the same time gained ~400kgs. The GTI in its heyday did 8sec for the 0-100. The BM would be around 10sec at best. The feeling of lightness in the suzuki also amplifies the sensation of speed.

Congrats on the BM.

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

final drive gears would be different too.

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

now if only i can get rid of 400 kgs from the car, already thinking of CF hood and SS extractors
what you guys think?

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

400 kgs is shitloads!! but i suppose every little bit counts

if you want accelaration, just change the diff gears

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

throw out ur backseats and ur boot lining, spare tyre, etc etc

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

Phil is right. The E36 320i is very tall geared. Good for cruising but not so good for acceleration. The gear ratios are very similar to the 323i that I had. And lugging around 1400 kg quickly is a big ask for a 110 kw engine.

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

which differential to get then?>
from the M3, please help?
also i tot a 323 would be much quicker off the line then my 320
isn't it?
did tot of putting in a 2.3 or 2.5 engine in.. any thoughts?

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

wieght of our car is there for a purpose... =) 320I is gd at mid range.

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

There is nothing surprising.

The Suzuki GTi is quicker off the line than a E36 320i manual - on paper, as well as in reality.
The GTi was once king of the car park races, together with the early Honda EG Civics (before the WRX and Evo came along, on SG shores, that is).
Put a 320i on the same car park race and the BMW won't even stand a chance (10+ secs, vs the GTI's 8+ secs).

We're talking about 0-100 here, not long-haul maximum speed.

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

go install a sprint booster and remap your ecu?

had mine done and the difference is remarkable.

they even said they would refund me the $ if i was not satisfied. but so far so good...

am overseas now, but dreaming of my car every night... sigh!

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

E36 cannot install sprint booster. Sprint booster is only for cars with electronic throttle...our E36 is mechanical cable...

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

oops, my bad...

anyways, go to j4c or bvo and ask them to do some 'magic' lah...

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

change diff gears, cheapest and best result for acceleration.

put a set of 4:11's in it!!

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

guess. everyone's right.. just a day i had the car. i took it up to genting . started driving at 0330hrs. and boy can it cruise.. i was doing 140 eazy/// up the mountain.. though it was pure.. torture.. really feel the car got not torque low down... whereas my GTI was flying up the hill... remembering the 8k redline..
on the way back was hitting 160 on certain stretches.. and no problem.. gues there is a trade off.
since gti struggles to get 130 on the straights....

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

so.. the short if it is to change diif.. anyone knows;; what is my 320 current gearing.. and where and how to get it done?

much obliged for any infor...!!!!

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

If your's a 320iM, it would likely be a 3.45, the next is the 3.93 (if I remember right) which will give you good pick up but you won't hit 200 kph.

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

Confirm that the final drive ratio for a E36 320i is 3.45 for both auto and manual.

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

Err.. pai seh.. the next lower diff for E36 is the 3.91 limited diff, not 3.93 as above.. other marque one.. kekekekeke...my bad...:yummie:

Re: E36 320 not quick off the line

3.91 will be killer off the line. hope your 5th gear is an overdrive though!!
