Re: e36 316/318 gear Box

My friend's e36 316ia auto transmission is smooth when shifting up gear but when vehicle going slow and fully accerelate will not drop to 3rd gear instead of remaining in 4th gear dragging.I got to manually pull down the gear level to down gear. Its drop gear automatically only when vehicle is at 30km/h but seems too late.Do you have experience this problems b4 or is it normal. Thanks for your reply and concern and wish you a happy chinese new year.

Hi, Lerseee
Busy with CNY past few days and didn't have the time to touch my PC

For e36 gearbox, it is difficult to tell what is the problem with your friend ride just frm your description.

316 gearbox normally will shift to 4th gear at around 85 km/h, it will drop to 3rd gear only if cruising speed falls below ~80km/h

If to overtake, did he floor the accelerator all the way down until a button beneath the accelerator click? The gear will drop instantaneously.

Pls check with him on the above.

Re: e36 316/318 gear Box

Hi, Lerseee

try kick down and the gearbox will shift down 2 gear or hard acceleration (w/o kick down), gearbox will shift down 1 gear

P.S - both scenario are based on cruising at 4th gear in constant speed (90km/h or above)

If both can't work, yr fren bimmer gearbox maybe having problem.
