E34 Transmission

Hi people,

I havent been on the forums for ages so pardon me if I did naything wrong, just a question, my E34 m20b25 auto transmission is starting to play up abit.

The Reverse will fail to engage and then suddenly jerk into place. Is this a problem with the torque converter? It use to happen rarely before but now abit more frequent.

How much for a 525 torque converter or need to change the whole box? anyone with experience?

How much to swap to manual if anyone has lobang for cheap/reasonable and reliable mechanic =x

is it even legal?

or is the slipping/failure to engage a totally different issue that I can solve easily?

not rich, so the most cost effective solution would be good =)

thanks...

Re: E34 Transmission

E34 Box can be rebuilt. Mine was done at Top Speed and was still perfect when I sold the car 7 years later.

Re: E34 Transmission

do you still remember how much it cost? and the address?

the gear box gears can be rebuilt but not the torque converter right?

acutally i am not quite sure what causes the R not to engage all the time or the slipping...

Re: E34 Transmission

Its just old and worn. The seals are no longer tight and thus the pressure gets upset which affects engagement of the clutches. And it seems like transmission of that generation last longer than current ones. It was in 2003/4 but I think it cost e around $2K, including a Torque converter.

Re: E34 Transmission

it will not be as cost effective if you are thinking of swapping to a manual, but yes it's legal if you get a original box and lta letter. must go inspection and all that, with forms to fill up blah blah blah.

from what you've mentioned, i think it's the problem with the clutch. a wear and tear issue. get it overhauled, it's the cheapest way to go. hope this helps.
