Hi i have an E34 m20 engine.... 520.. but its running more like a... ermmmm 1.6L? i dunno... where can i go do a compression test? is this the test to check if the engine is still ok? or wat else should i test to make sure it still runs like a 2L car....
hmm any recommendations on how to improve it? i changed to k&N drop in filter and change all the spark plugs to NGK iridium.. yea... is it advisable to change the exhuast when the engine is so old? and is it advisable or even useful to get a ECU chip.... and are there any legalised projector head lights for my car cos the head lights abit dim....
Chipping helps, so do consider it. Exhaust change is lots of money for negligable results on this motor. besides, the originals seem to last forever........You have done about eveything worth doing for an M20, short of heart transplant. For inspiration google metric machanics........BTW one of the best ways to get an M20 e34 moving again is to revert to 15" wheels.
Basically the E34 520 is a very under power car because of it's very heavy body. I would say that you'll need a minimum 525 to get the E34 really going. I'm driving a 530 V8 and I'm very happy with the performance so far. But there is one thing which I'm not too sure of, my car has just done 140,000km and I asked my workshop if I'll need to change the Timing Belt but they told me that for 1995 model (E34), it's with Chain type of timing belt thus no need to replace.
Can any kind experience owner of the same model/age E34 please help reconfirm this?
I certainly don't wish to have a broken timing belt damaging the engine...!!!
Thanks!!!
well... i did think of changing the engine... illegally to 2.5 or 3L but..... it would cost alot right? and its illegal.... anyway... do you know of any legal angel eyes kinda head lamps tat i can change to? do not have to be HID bright but just brighter.... =)
If you push the back of the car down with your hands and the car starts to bounce... does it mean the suspension spoil? how much to change...? maybe a list of models and price and where to do.. =p
thx
Could you please advise addresses of some of the parts shop you mentioned?
Because I went through those stated in Resources folder and all of them are some kind of a workshop and they do not carry stock of parts.
Thanks a million..!!!
Your link http://engsoon.com.sg/ cannot open leh....
Anyway I heard that in Waterloo Street have some parts shops carrying BMW parts, will try check it out the next time when I'm in Sg.
I got another question reagrding my 1995 E34 530i V8, it's about the coolant comsumtion.
My car will need an average of 2-3 litters of refill/top up everyday. My daily usage of the car is about 40-50KM, is that normal?
theres obviously a leak int he system...check ur hoses, and ur drain valves etc.. the rubber seals may have deteriorated... indicividual items not htat exp to replace..long as it isnt something like...ur radiator pipes !!!!
haha..
true 2.0L m20 on e34 runs worse than jap 1.6L, but e comfort is there lor. if there is no high consumption on lub oil or petrol, y waste $ for compression test? if backside itchy & want more power, juz transplant 2.5L........
batam man? hmmm.... u operating in batam? heehee. 2-3L of top up is definitely somting wrong wor. few yrs bac got e same prob, top up 1L every 2-3 days. went 2 a few workshop 2 check, no leakage, no milky lub oil, pressure test cooling system, oso cant find out e prob. workshop say got 2 open up e cyl head check, if worse hav 2 complete overhaul...... so didnt waste time & $, drop in 2.5L.......... pain 1 time rather than slow death...... wahahaha.........
older cars would always have a higher tendency for parts to fail...i wouldnt say thats there's something wrong with ur car, rather than, perhaps its time to replace certain parts... all part of ownership, to me at least....
i wouldnt worry too much, but personally as a habit, if the cooling sysem is faulty, i'll make sure that everything associated with it is checked out and replaced. that saves me time and $$, in terms of repeated labour costs.....
and as woffgang says..."...pain 1 time rather than slow death..."
I 101% agreed with the 1 time pain and solving future problem/trouble with it.
BUT...!!! I need to know what are the 1 time pain to do with, and workshop here just may not be skillful enough to tell me that wor...
HAIzzzzzzzzz............
probably u shld do a pressure test on ur cooling system, this may show where ur 2-3L of water leaking at which area. if there really an external leak, recommend 2 change all hoses (7-8 pcs i think), thermostat & coolant, if urs are old......... this is 1 small pain.
