Dust-free brake pads

Hello!

My e90 (320) stock brake front pads are down to 2-30% and I'm thinking of getting dust-free pads. Any recommendations of good brands, and where to get them? I've read good things about Hawk and Akebano, but don't really see where to buy..

Hi slipperdan,

FYI - There is no such thing as Dust-free brake pads. Only Low Dust brake pads.

Hawk and Akebano are just brands and maybe popular in other continents e.g. maybe Europe, but not in Asia.

We get those black/brown dust/dirt is because of metallic or semi-metallic pads. Low dust brake pads can reduce this by upto 90%... never 100%.

Most low dust brake pads basically have Ceramic compounds... these are the type u should seek, brand... those popular in Asia would suffice as most (if not all) have extensive racing technology transfer.

Oh yeah low dust, not dust-free. I see, any brands that I might be able to get here? Not sure where to source such parts..

Re: Dust-free brake pads

No affiliation to any workshop but am sure bmw-sg site sponsors carries.

Re: Dust-free brake pads

i have been calling some of the site-sponsor WS, but none of them carries Hawk or other low-dust brake pads anymore ...

i am also keen in changing my front brakes to low-dust pads....

please share any information ...

thanks.

Re: Dust-free brake pads

Most should sell EBC. They r quite low dust.

Re: Dust-free brake pads

just got an accident today due to low dust pad... advise to use original as they really break very well... cheers

Wah what brand were you using? No bite/stopping force?

Hope you're fine!

Dear Carson,

so sorry for your misfortune. Can you share with us which brand of low brake dust pad, did you use? How did you derive it was the brake pad problem during the accident?

Thanks,

Re: Dust-free brake pads

brand forget... but for sure... low dust pad breaking distance abit longer... unlike the original... low dust pad is like trying hard to stop... original pad is stop almost instantly, you will feel it de... i dun care about myself, heng the front car is safe... and ntuc motor bike came for a private settlement... paid $1200 for his repair on the spot, and mine is ???

Hi carson9429, the above statement seems really wrong. Before people/noobs misunderstands that low-dust (ceremic compound) brake pads are inferior to metallic brake pads i.e. original or stock, below is aa quote for ya.

"If you have a high performance vehicle, such as a race car, most experts will recommend ceramic brake pads. That is because they will not hold as much heat. This is crucial when you have to brake from a high speed as opting for ceramic pads can reduce your risk of brake glazing or the brakes overheating; however, because ceramic brake pads tend to absorb less heat, it is necessary to use larger brake rotors and kits in high performance vehicles to absorb the excess heat."

The incident could simply meant a mismatch of ceramic brake pads and brake rotors and kits thus resulting in inferior braking instead of superior.

In general ceramic brake pad properties:
- low dust, low noise, less brake fade and smoother braking.

Whereas Metallic brake pad properties:
- affordability, aggressiveness and cool braking. Supposely wears faster than ceramic.

Lastly if interested in all the properties of metallic and ceramic, go Carbon Ceramic, they weigh much less, have superior heat dispursing and bite... most very expensive thgh.

* Metallic are superior to ceramic compound because metallic take heat away from the rotor.

i have no idea about all the tech part you mention, i just pay and use them, am on slotted rotor as well.
