I believe it is a noob question but really confuse after reading the posts on DTC.
My question is:
When do I activate DTC? Rainy days? Can anyone enlighten me?

Re: Dtc

It is always on unless you manually deactivate it.

Re: Dtc

Ryan's right. It's ON by default. Press it once to deactivate DTC. Hold on to it for 4-5 secs to turn OFF all assistance. BURN OUT time!

Re: Dtc

Ok now I know it is always on. Then why idrive indicates DTC activated when I pressed once yet you mentioned it is deactivated?

Press and hold means deactivating everything then my question is what about raining days? Should I leave it in default mode or press DTC once when road is slippery? Sorry for all the questions folks..

Re: Dtc

Do not press the DTC button if you want full electronic assistance. Leave it alone, that is also why BMW engineers designed it to be 'ON' by default. Press it once if you want a little bit of fun, hold and depress for 4-5 seconds if you want MAXIMUM fun, meaning going sideways and massive wheelspin. Not recommended for wet conditions....the road I mean.

DTC - stop tyres slipping when accelerating (opposite of ABS, which stops tyres slipping when braking)

DSC - maintains control / stops drift

Default is ON, for a reason.......

no, but u press the DTC when your rear wheels are trapped in somewhat deep sand.

Re: Dtc

Or when you wanna launch the car, presumably traffic lights sprints.

With the DTC on, the power will be cut automatically beyond the wheelspin threshold (breaking traction). To maintain torque at launch, one can switch off the DTC. However, the side-effect is wheelspin and loss of control.

Re: Dtc

Oic seems like if i don't do launch in traffic light, don't track and get stuck in mud basically can leave DTC alone..just drive by default

Yes, and safer, unless you wanna do some stunts.....

For effects of switching off DTC and DSC, refer to this 5th Gear clip......

sirex leave it at default i.e. Alone

you can sign up for PML's ADT for some fun with it...otherwise don't touch it

Re: Dtc

Dynamic Stability Control, a comprehensive, state-of-the-art traction and stability system; DSC appears here in its newest generation, with the advanced Dynamic Traction Control function.

It has always been possible to de-activate DSC functions (except antilock braking) via a console switch ie. (3 sec. or more) push on the DTC switch in the console.

A briefer push, however, selects the new Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) function.

The normal traction-control function not only applies the brakes of individual wheels as they start to slip, but also reduces engine power. This keeps the vehicle very stable, but under certain conditions (such as climbing a snow-covered hill) can leave little power to move forward.

At low speeds and in gentle cornering maneuvers, DTC allows more wheel spin by de-activating engine intervention. As speed and/or cornering vigor increases, DTC progressively restores engine intervention.

To the driver, DTC means -
 • Enhanced traction under low-friction conditions (sand, gravel, deep or packed snow).
 • Allowing greater use of the driver's skill at low speeds under these low-friction conditions.
 • Maintenance of full DSC stability benefits under higher-speed, more vigorous driving conditions.

So, for BMWs with DTC : Press the DTC/DSC button once to activate DTC, I-drive will show "DTC Active".

This will give you more 'Fun' in slightly slippery floors....

Re: Dtc

Very detailed explanations, guys.

Does anyone realize or know the effect of DTC on rear brakes? Mine seems to disappear with moderate driving...

Or press and hold for 5 seconds and turn everything off. This will give you maximum 'Fun' in any condition floors!:cloud9:

Re: Dtc

Very informative thread, no wonder it doesnt feels like flying out when i corner a bend at 80kmh

Today i heard a loud thud underneath my car and the DTC/DSC got deactivated after 1-2 mins saying there is a problem. There were 2 errors when i checked the status, first was the DTC/DSC problem, second was the roll back brakes failure. I am very sure nothing hit my car as i'm driving on a clean road, i even checked the rear view mirror after hearing the thud to double confirm there is nothing on the road.

The error didnt appear after i restart the engine. I wonder if its serious.. should i send it for check up?

I previously encountered a different incident whereby my idling RPM dropped until near engine stall after very hard acceleration. Restarted engine and everything was back to normal. I couldn't replicate the problem again... Sent to PML@KA for checkup and they couldn't find anything on that either.

Yours may be a one-off incident like mine and PML may say the same thing to you. But of course for peace of mind, you should still sent it in.

I just wonder if the on-board computer capture any such faults or warnings for PML or any other BMW service center to check. Anyone knows?

Re: Dtc

Seems like its a problem now as the error keeps coming out a few mins after start.

Yeah, does the on-board computer log the errors for the service centre to check?
