yes DS is still auto, just the engine will rev higher than 4,000rpm max out @ 6500rpm before the next higher gears is selected.
don't use DS as engine brake. not good one. unless necessary. e.g.drop to lower gear while entering slow corners to gain traction.

What threadstarter means that, he wants to drive in DS all the time because when release pedal, the gearing is lower gear, so engine brake occurs. This gives the driver a better sense of security and car control.
Fine! By all means, drive in DS.
But engine braking is not a really nice thing for the engine. It lugs the engine and creates real high temps at the valves. Wear and tear increases.
What's wrong with using the brakes? They're made to wear out.

blipping the throttle is not for engine braking lah.delrosa81;322915 said:Sorly ah off topic abit, but if manual then can heel and toe, especially around corners, damn fun leh, blip throttle when downshifting....shiok...E46 M3 SMG also have the auto blip function right? Damn fun man kekeke this is more fun man! Auto better use brakes better? As what you mentioned, I rather wear out the brakes than the transmission or engine

There are 3 instances to blip throttle on a manual:
Double Declutch - when shifter in neutral, blip throttle, then enter gear - function of blip is to spin the synchronizers in the gearbox so that when entering gear the synchros no need to wear out.
Heeltoe - when braking, gear is in but clutch pedal still pressed, blip the throttle and before the rpm falls, disengage clutch quickly - function of blip is to sync the engine speed with the output shaft speed (related to wheel speed) so that when release clutch the wheels/output shaft don't drag the engine speed up suddenly .... smooth driving is the result, and on track, minimize the danger of losing traction on the driving wheels.
Rev Match - without braking, you shift to lower gear, before release clutch pedal, blip throttle and before rpm falls, release clutch pedal quickly. function of blip as above.
And yes, there is a combination of Double Declutch and Heeltoe/rev match which race drivers especially endurance racers always use if they don't have sequential shifter.
On the SMG, double declutch is not done, so there is just a single blip.
You can engine brake without heeltoe actually. In fact, with heeltoe, engine braking is reduced because you are actually raising the revs of the engine to match the wheels, since engine braking is the enemy of smooth driving.
In F1, one of the banned devices is engine braking control. Engine braking control has several effects, but the device aids to prevent spin by keeping revs high if throttle liftoff during cornering. This has arguably more impact than the ban on traction control.
If you are driving really really fast, Ds is good because there is a higher probability of the transmission NOT shifting during cornering. Because if the transmission shifts down during cornering, the engine braking effect will upset the rear driving tyres and you'll lose the rear end.
