I bought a 1995 BMW 740i about a month ago. I updated the headlights, tail-lights, side markers, emblems, and I'm planning on tinting the driver and passenger side windows. (the rear windows are already tinted) Anyway, the car has a rough idle until the engine is warm. I heard this is a common problem, but I want to know whether there is anything I can do to fix it without changing the engine block. I changed the air filter, spark plugs, and oil. Still the same issue. There is an air sensor on my air filter that i heard could be faulty causing this problem. Does anyone know what I could do? The engine runs great, but on a cold start, it will hit 1000rpm when i start it, then fall right away to 500rpm. I have to run it to 1000rpm again to keep it from dying. Once the engine is warm, it runs great and idles at 800 or even 500rpm smoothly. I read in the car's manual that you shouldn' t warm up the car just sitting there. I understood this to mean that I should take off as soon as the car is started, even on a cold engine. Is this correct? (I keep the car under 2000rpm of course till the engine has warmed up) Please let me know if there are any fixes for this rough start. Any advise?

Not trying to scare you or anything but my father used to own a 740i as well same years as yours...

For a while we found the car idle very strangly...uneven...a bit jumping...not too much when we had the car checked out...it turns out that one of the cylinder wasnt initiating combustion...being a V8...all 8 cylinders should be moving but only 7 cylinders were...so basically you had 7 cylinders dragging a dead cylinder...cause more wear on the other 7 cylinder and potental problems in the future so the car was traded to a dealer...

I would have been butt heck to repair...so yea~

Yeah, I know about the problems in the cars in those years. I am taking it into a shop on the 11th, and I will know whats going on then. I doubt I have a dead cylinder, but we will see. I will let everyone know how the check-up went once its over.

Thanks,

Re: Does ANYONE know? 7-series engine issues.

Ok everyone, I finally have news on my 740. I took it to a good import shop, and they looked it all over. They said it was in great condition, but that it would need the intake system re-sealed. That involved re-sealing the whole intake system, so the cost would be $600-$700 USD. I said.... NO. For some reason, I dont think I need to re-seal the WHOLE system, I think its just the air flow mass sensor. But I'm no pro either. Sorry this took so long, but I thought I would let you all know, even if it didnt really matter. So right now, I'm just driving the bimmer the way it is, and I don't care. I might get a sensor later, and see if that fixes the problem.

Oh, by the way, I'm thinking about putting some rims on my 1995 740i. Does anyone know the CORRECT bolt pattern and all the offset and all that? Because I want to make sure that I am purchasing the correct rims..... Thanks!

Your PCD should be 5x120. Good luck on your repairs too!

Oh, ok, thats what I thought it was. But, whats the range of sizes that will fit? Don't I have a range? For example: 5x120-125? Thanks.
