DO NOT Press Start/Stop Button While Driving

Hi
Just want to warn other BMW owners with Start/Stop button.

There is actually no safety feature to stop the car engine when on the move, unlike the start sequence.

For starting, you need to step on the brake before the engine can be cranked with the start button. The other day someone pressed the button while on the move and the engine stopped. Luckily we were in the carpark doing about 10-20 km/h. The car did not jerk to stop though, just continue forward.

Its especially dangerous cause the button is on the passenger (unlike the key models with the key on the driver side). So be careful with itchy fingered children... Its so tempting to press.

I wish they had put in some safety feature for stopping engines.

Thanks for the warning. I have 2 kids with itchy fingers. You know what the sales guy say about the position of the button - its a safety feature just in case you get a heart attack while driving, the passenger can switch the engine off. He did not mentioned that the car will carry-on on the path with no control. That's not very safe :(

When the ignition is off, don't you lose power assisted braking and steering too?

Re: DO NOT Press Start/Stop Button While Driving

I used to have a Renault Megane with start/stop button as well, never really tried to see if it would shut off the engine while vehicle in motion but I thought BMW should have thought of this when they design the circuit.

Saab 95 also has the ignition key right in the center console area, I always wonder if any kids would just turn it off !!

it could also be a safety feature, when you need to switch off the engine immdiately, for example in an engine fire case, or if the ECU doesnt auto shutdown the engine in an accident.

thats because in the conventional key system, one can still switch off the engine while on the move.

pros and cons i guess.

but please be careful that your brake booster and power steering ceases to work (unless they are electric driven like in the newer models). I used to restart my engine on the move (after double checking on traffic conditions) to reset my ECU if it goes into limp home halfway.
