Does anyone know if the mobile speed cameras, the handheld ones, work at nite? I usually get my speed fix late at nite so have been wondering about this.
Yeah they do.

Personally got caught once, i wasn't the one driving.

Laser doesn't require light to operate.

thats scary... cant go fast in the day and now my nite ventures have to be much slower too. I got snapped by a mobile camera along clementi ave 6 2 mths back by 2 cops sitting under a tree with a handheld. so u say u were nabbed at nite???

but they have to flash you to get the number plate right? so you would know!?

not referring to the stationary cameras with flash like the one along the pie/bke but the HANDHELD ones without flash. normally operated by a cop sitting near bushes along the road or installed in their car.

Yes they still use flash to get ur no. plate but you will not notice it at all. The flash is Infra Red.

so do metal numbering plates/chrome letters affect the infra red?

Not sure. But it works like the night vision. IR will magnify the dark spot and show the edges well.

So I gather if the no plate light is bright enuf, the metal fonts will reflect more light and perhaps the image will be a big clustered white spot??

*** sigh ***, getting harder to enjoy a bit of speed nowadays. I am sure nobody wants to advocate speeding, esp in tiny, build up singapore but lets be honest, the feel of the car coming together, suspension, engine, exhaust, etc and maybe playing with the gearbox, be it a steptronic or stick, is intoxicating.

Yup, the good old days are gone.

But we still enjoy driving around at legal speed limit, once in awhile we can see chio bu driving and nice buildings too. Hahhaa... cut the crap..

If u like speed, go NS or Sepang track
Free and easy.

any idea if radar detectors work in sgp? they should be able to sense it when the guys in blue zap the cars in front of u and beep a warning..

It does work but you need to get the latest model to detect the TP's laser or frequency.

Having said that, it will be too tiring to keep up with technology for this speedtrap detector which cost a bomb. Its not like changing handphones or something..

You will be happy initially, spotting the TPs & cameras and getting too confident with the gadget. But all it takes is just ONE slippage and tats it.

So my advice is drive within the speed limit. You will never have any worries!

One question, the stationary speed cameras like the one on the ecp before the sheares bridge. Do they take the speed as you approach or after you pass the camera?

Junior, welcome to the forums! :wavey:

BTW, let me just give a small brief description of how the radar system works in Singapore. This is from personal experience and i have another forum member who can attest to this. (when we got caught ahahahah) i will not name names, but Shaun can help me answer to this also. :ehhh:

Basically, given this scenario. A car is speeding along a road. A police has setup a speed outpost about a KM down the road. A radar detector is setup and is pointing in the direction of the oncoming car.

If car is speeding above the speed limit, the radar detector is hooked up to a siren of sorts, which will emit a whine if the speed limit is exceeded. This whine increases with the car's speed, so they will know if you're speeding very fast and suddenly brake, because they will hear the WHINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNEeeeeeeeeee whine... nothing(speed within legal limit). They would have also clocked your speed at that point. If a police officer is pointing the gun straight at your car, they would have spotted you speeding before you even saw them. Given if it was a straight road, it would be about 1-2KM. They would flag you down and book you on the spot without question. The whining sound application can simply give you away while the officers are sitting down and lim kopi...without even looking at you at all.

With regards to the phantom plate..it's only good for photo applications(i.e overexposure due to speed camera, red light camera etc). If kena ambush by mobile squad or police outpost, no way to escape.

Only true way to escape radar detector is either, paint your car chrome or have true stealth designs implemented... haha no lah, radar jammer or radar detector..but must have equal k bands.

yah ryan is right. the audio cue just lets the cops know that there is someone speeding, to stop him/her, and to check the computer for the speed that it has already automatically logged.

as long as your car is amongst a pack of cars, they cops won't be able to tell which of the pack is speeding. the problem is that when you accelerate hard from a stop or are cruising fast you end up being ahead of the pack and get caught. the only way you'll ever get out of getting caught by a system like this is if you are lucky enough to be speeding, and as you crest the hill or round the curve around which they're waiting, you run up on a whole bunch of other cars. you'll either not be picked up by the computer (shielded) or if it captures a speed and whines, they won't know which car out of the pack was speeding.

..or if you have some kind of radar jammer - but like whiskey said, if you slip once, or if they are using some other equipment, then you are in big trouble. stay safe (and keep OTHERS safe) on the streets.. do all your hard driving on tracks.

i will not name names, but Shaun can help me answer to this also.

 .......... :OTpolis: :errmm: :OTpolis: <---- NOT a good situation. the two idiots partying on the sideline turned out to be totally unhelpful. So much for friends! :hmmidont:

Eric,

I know what u mean but I heard that the car driving at 100km might still kena if it is very close to the car in front. Dunno how true that is though.

So if I get a detector like a Valentine 1 right now. Lets say they do some upgrade to the speed cameras. Could they detect that I am using a radar detector?
What are the charges for using one?

Hmm... tis I would not know. It might be true cos the stationary camera is activated via laid cables (at least 2) beneath the road. Once the front wheel hit the 1st cable, the computer module register a "switch on" and when the front wheel hit the 2nd cable, it closes the loop and starts its calculation within split seconds and snap a shot at your rear if you exceeded the set speed.
