Different Engine Mapping between E46 Saloon and Coupes

It makes sense that they would either really do it, or just say they do it. Saying it makes the coupe guys feel good because it is a small justification for the money they pay or the version of the E46 they've chosen. Doing it gives the coupe guys that little extra for the higher price they paid.

It doesn't take much cost at all to tweak maps esp once the base map is all there. Throw in a bit more timing, run slightly more aggressive AFRs, compensation maps still can be convervative for the non-optimal situations, and lastly knock failsafe is still there.

Adding 5% more stress to a 70% stressed base, you still end up only a 75% which is barely tickling the engine especially when it is only 75% of the nearly purely friction and thermal stresses - not the major ones like component acceleration forces.

Hmmm I've always wondered about this.

The E46 coupe is slightly longer, wider and heavier than the saloon, if anything for the same engine, it's performance should be poorer.

I always thought the only mechanical differences between the coupe and saloon are the exhaust (exhaust note is different) and suspension (assuming the sports suspension was not optioned in the saloon).

I'll be surprised if their engine maps are different.

The Coupe and the Saloon is using the same part number for a programmed DME.... So i don think it's true that coupe and sedan has got different mapping.

Bro, just to clarify... tot the DME/ECU comes without the program? Just the hardware.

PML will flash in the program once they install it.

I remember I had mine replaced for the E36 320i and above is wat they did.

Yup.... The one that PML use is always empty one...

But from the Part Catalogue, they also have the pre-programmed one.. So since from the pre-programmed ones, it says that it can be used for both coupe and sedan, i reckon that it means the sedan and coupe is running on the same programme...

the engines being so similar can run either program. using the same hardware is acceptable and it can't be guaranteed that a subsequent flash over doesn't happen. Even if it doesn't the degree of loss is minute.
