coupe - 228i or m235i?

hi all, am considering the above 2 models... 228i is already avail for "preorder" @ PML but no test drive unit yet. im leaning towards 228i due its favourable price (both one-off such as OMV etc as well as recurring such as petrol/road tax bills); the "degradation" in performance should be negligible for even spirited driving, i guess?

just to clarify, am thinking of the m-sport edition with adaptive suspension and M brakes; so key difference with m235i should be mainly just engine.

what do you guys think? anything i missed out? is timing the market important? :)

How much is the 228i?

i'm guessing it will be quite noticeable. it won't be just the engine (which on the 235i is a peach) , but the gearbox and overall tuning as well. But if the 228i undercuts it quite a bit, might as well save some $$$ if you're not that performance oriented.

based on list price,

228i:
$211+6=217k for M-sport bodykit/adaptive suspension/M-brakes
245hp/350Nm torque, weight = 1460kg
0-100: 5.7s

M235i:
~$250k for everything
326hp/450Nm torque, weight = 1530kg (i.e. 70kg more)
0-100: 4.8s

M235i has 5yr warranty under Munich; 228i has 3 yrs under PML. Not sure whether the discounts are similar.

not very big difference in pricing.....

* M235i for me...
cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeers

Re: coupe - 228i or m235i?

I would go for the 228i, the performance is way more than adequate for such a compact car in S'pore. Save the extra money for more options.

Re: coupe - 228i or m235i?

IL4 vs IL6?

Of course, IL6.

Re: coupe - 228i or m235i?

I would go for munich as 5 year coverage except tyres your account.
PML only cover defects ...

6 is always better then 4 ...

Munich likely a better then PML. in term of waiting time, in terms of professionalism, in terms of honesty.

235 more things to mod and play later.

Re: coupe - 228i or m235i?

$39K for
- better service
- free service 5 years
- 2 extra years warranty
- 2 more cylinders
- Extra 80 horses n 100 torque
- pariah M
- better overall performance

M235 seems a much better deal

Re: coupe - 228i or m235i?

39 thousand dollars, some takes a minute to earn it, some take years.
whats the meaning of 39K to you?
if money not an issue, of course its the M

Re: coupe - 228i or m235i?

Thanks guys. Most seem to prefer three m235i.

My hesitation in going for the m235i comes from the fact that, after test driving it some time back, my first instinct is that this is too powerful for most of my wants in a car, including the spirited drive once in a while.

I read threads in the us forum and the reviews are mixed: some argue that the 228i is "good enough", some argue that it is lighter and more balanced (50:50 vs 52:48 for m235i) etc. and mind you, all these for us$4k.

What's not clear to me is Munich vs pml, and difference in length of warranty. Is it really worth that much? Some seem to think this is the case, although I was under the impression that both the N55 and N20 engine blocks are fairly hardy.

Re: coupe - 228i or m235i?

If I may chip in, is the 228i even available via Munich Auto? I get the impression MA sells M cars only.

228i is at pml. M235i at munich

Thanks for that. No wonder PML price list didn't feature M235i.

Negotiate for the M235. Better value for a lot more car, and better service.

Re: coupe - 228i or m235i?

How is MA noticeably better than PML?
