hi folks

whats the minimum clearance for the front bumper and ground before it scraps in common carparks?

is it a Coke can height? vaguely remember hearing something like that...
cos im thinking of getting coils to lower further...

dudes with lowered cars and low lips like CSL w/splitters and Arquay/mtech, pls help!

Re: Clearance between front bumper and ground

Mine's about a coke height... only place that I scrape the undercarriage is Golden Mile carpark... CSL bumper and lowered. (Like u, I still feel that my car is too high!)

Re: Clearance between front bumper and ground

I reckon if you have clearance of abt 13cm, shd be able to clear most humps in Spore (by driving diagonally across some humps if need be). Another factor is whether your ride has a short or long overhang as well.

Re: Clearance between front bumper and ground

Minimum is one-cigarette-box height.

My previous Hamann front lip was slightly lower than that, and trust me, it was such a pain when engaging every hump or slope. Looks chio, but not practical at all.

Re: Clearance between front bumper and ground

wow.. Xavier.. going Coilovers ah.. use BC ah.. cheap and good I heard...

I think for most humps, you wouldn't kena la.. except for those, like the Bugis junction one, at the Hotel entrance side, those humps, no need coilovers also will kena...
sometimes, its not your bumper that might kena, but your middle part.. the side skirts... as like wat T6 bro said, whether your car is short or long overhang...

Re: Clearance between front bumper and ground

koni sport springs lowered 35mm front and 30mm back with no bodykit or lip also can kenna at some places...trust me some humps are bigger than pavements!!!

Re: Clearance between front bumper and ground

tks guys!

during installation, i referred to to a very nice and low white Z4 at BVO (xkrime)...his front got 7 fingers gap...about the same as a ciggy box...

did the same for mine...still think it looks high but due to those humps..but in US, those cars look really low...envious! now on 1 finger squeeze in front/back

i even scrape at Takashimaya exit ramp sometimes..

T6,
Enlighten me, what is short vs long overhang?

Re: Clearance between front bumper and ground

About 5 inches will be your min.
OR if you can clear BVO entrance... you are safe... hehee..

overhang refers to the part of the car in front of the front tyres and behind the back tyres.

n. (ō'vər-hăng')

1. A projecting part, such as an architectural structure or a rock formation.

reminds me of just last week or 2 weeks ago, was driving a friend home. road was dark, going down ard 80ish i think... suddenlly saw this slab of brick in the middle of the road.... too late to brake, too dangerous to swerve, so juz held onto the wheel and brace for impact... but luckily, my car not low enuff to impact the object on the road.... phew... my fren den ask why i suddenly so tense... think any lower, my front lip go bye bye liao

Well, Mockingbird has explained it. So if u have a long overhang, the chance of you scraping a hump is higher coz it takes a longer distance for the front of your car to clear a hump which means the front part of the car before the front tyres become more "vulnerable" all that while.

If you have a short overhang like a Mini, then before you know it, your front tyre is already in contact with the hump thereby lifting your car up and less chance of your lowered ride hitting a hump so easily.

But having said that, even if your ride has a short overhang, if the front lip of your car is super low, there wld be no recourse unless you avoid humps totally.:yummie:

or u can try going over humps sideways lo...

Not always possible coz sometimes there are impediments on left and right e.g. a narrow carpark entrance and exit. Going diagonal is almost a must but if got lawnmower front skirt, may still scrape.

Re: Clearance between front bumper and ground

haahhaha... that's true though.. yesterday... i went to Lavender food court...parked at Hoa Nam building.. coming out of the carpark.. i didn't scrape my bumper but something in the middle of my car kena... a loud thug... my heart dropped....
my car is still on lowered springs only... don't know whats gonna happen when go to coilovers..
the car put at home and admire can liao i guess....

If the height is less than the cigarette box in length, you will not clear BVO's hump. You will need the wooden planks to help......

Re: Clearance between front bumper and ground

yo adam,
if u go coilovers it'll be stiffer so the bounce is less, so wont hit the midsection...

Kenntona:
yeah can clear the BVO hump..actually now they put the metal planks, easier to clear than last time..

Re: Clearance between front bumper and ground

hahaha... wouldn't hit mid section but will start to scrape my front bumper and skirts probably... the E63 is already very low.. with coilovers... super slam dub liao.. but no choice.. springs alone cannot make it la.. still lots of swaying.... :)

Same thing happened to my car at Golden Mile (little Bangkok), now my undercarriage has scratches.
