bmw ecu remapping

Re: bmw ecu remapping

me thinking this way too

spinworks, did you do a before and after dyno test on your car to come up with the 30% gain?
If so, did you ask your tuner to do an aggressive tuning for you or just the normal one?

True, with a dyno chart is easier to justified the gains.......

vroom vroom

cheers

Re: I had my 525 ECU remapped recently!

I've seen many similar comments that led to me think that the improvements perceived by users are due more to modified throttle mappings rather than actual HP or torque gains.

Some drivers who tuned their ECU's, but disabled the throttle remapping, noticed that HP/torque gains (by themselves) were marginal. The most obvious "improvement" came from the more sensitive throttle map. It would be nice if NA engines could be tuned to have more actual power, without risking long-term damage.

An engine definitely feels more responsive and exciting when it can climb to high revs when the accelerator is touched slightly, but I do find the stock throttle map allows for more gradiated control over the throttle.

Hi guys
I dont have to floor my car to hit 4000 or more rpm.

ya, in short - more power rather than just a more sensitive throttle

one way to know the real improvement other than doing a dyno is getting a reference car for comparision.
my 523 lose out marginally to the older E230 and A4 1.8T in standing start and during high speed acceleration.
i'm looking for a chance to test out with these 2 cars now that i've done the tuning to see if its true.

hehe, hope so la.
will update you when i happen to meet any.

Re: bmw ecu remapping

U could test with a stock 523 to see whatis the difference too...i think thats the best gauge if this tuning did make your car faster..

Let me share a little of my experience with OBDtuning. I've approached Dave couple of month ago for his ECU remapping on my 323i. He is a very nice guy and patiently explained what kind of improvements that I will experience after tuning. As he mentioned, he will, first, download the current ECU map and send it to Germany for the techs to twig for improvement, then re-install with the new ECU.

After he installed the re-mapped ECU and when for a test drive, together, felt a little improvement on the torque (butt feel), but not much. As I complained about not much improvement, he mentioned that I will feel further improvement, as I drive more, and the full gain of the re-mapped ability will be truly felted after 3 tanks of gas refill.

As he offered 7 days money back if no improvement is being felt, I tested out the car in various driving style and conditions during these 7 days. However, the feeling is about the same as initial test drive, even after 5~6 days (not much improvement). With this, I requested for money back, which he kept his promise. As my car was the initial 323i that he re-mapped, he offered me to keep the ECU re-mapped program.

I've been driving with the tuned ECU for around 3 months+ (a lot more than 3 tanks of gas re-fill), and I confirmed that the gain is not much (by butt feel).

One more note. As Dave mentioned, the fuel efficiency will improve during normal driving, because the gears will shift smoother at lower rpm. Again, I do not witness this phenomenon, and my fuel efficiency got worst than before (with no change in driving style). At first, I thought possibly that my service time is getting close and I need to change my engine oil. However, after servicing, my fuel efficiency still maintains in the worst state. (I even change the oil usage from PML's standard Castro to Mobile 1.)

Of course, different people has different experiences, as Dave has previously mentioned that he has tuned 523i, and his customer was extremely happy with the improvement. Sorry to say that such improvement is not being felt on my 323i.

Hey Jonsuta

I have exactly the same experience as you. I also have E90 323i and did remap with Dave Naidu of OBD Tuning two weeks ago. After driving remapped car for a week, could not feel much difference so sent email to Dave to tell him so. He has not replied to my email. The remap is supposed to convert 323i to 325i spec. but now, after two weeks, still cannot feel much difference.

Not sure whether to ask for my money back like you. Maybe we are expecting too much from the remap.

Re: bmw ecu remapping

I guess we are expecting too much...I remain skeptical of ecu remapping without any kind of additional modifications done to the car, ie. larger air intake, exhaust,injectors...etc...

In general speaking, Dave is offering money back guarantee for improvement after his version of the ecu tuning. Whether to take this option or not is up to your own decision. (For me, I personally feel that the result is not worth the money that I paid, so I approached Dave for holding to his word on his offer.)

However, I will suggest that you should make your decision, at the soonest.

I agree. Among all of the engine performance mods that I've done (larger air intake, ignition upgrade/Volks spark plugs/air scoop at Rodney's place [R2D] and the ECU remapping), I feel that the ECU remapping gave the least affect, while all other mods feels improvement on not only right away, but gets better as time passes. (Of course, better engine oil will also feel the pickup and gear shifting response to be better too!)

Re: bmw ecu remapping

Hey guys

After my lack of success with ecu tuning, I decided to give the BMS Powerbox distributed by Boss Motorsports a try as I had read many good reviews of this product by owners who had installed the product. The powerbox is a piggyback system for the BMW N51/N52 motor. It combines 2 products into one - gives real gains in Hp/Torque similar to ECU Remapping, as well as user adjustable Throttle Response similar to other Throttle Booster/TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) modification products.

So I had the Powerbox installed 3 weeks ago and the results have been - wow, this thing really works! Even by butt feel, I can feel a significant increase in power. Car is much quicker now and there is much stronger pulling power from low down and up the rev range. And what is more, my fuel consumption has actually improved. I did not do dyno test but others have done and posted their results on the Boss Motorsports webpage. Typical gains reported are increase of about 25 bhp.

Well worth the cost of $1,200. Unfortunately, works only with the 6-cylinder models so not applicable to 4-pot 320i and 318I.

Re: bmw ecu remapping

anyone knw anywher or any tuner whom can remap 318IS coupe E36? or mayb tune it with UNICHIP Q? haven found any reliable tuner yet..

guys help pls... a little under power leh this car... or mayb not enough power haha

Why don't you try some of the forum sponsors here like Juzz for Cars or Boss Motorsports? I believe they can do dyno tuning of 318 and 320.

Re: bmw ecu remapping

I ve installed the powerbox last week on my e90 325i. It really shows me the "WoW" effect!!! No regret!!!

Hi jonsuta,

for your case could it be the tuner?
you can try Pbox from BOSS......to see if there is any difference

cheers
