Re: BMW Concept CS
The Concept CS is the closest that BMW will get to admitting that “you were right, we were wrong” on the new styling direction undertaken by Bangle and Hooydonk. As a company, BMW AG will never publicly admit that they stuffed up on any new undertakings. But they do listen to criticism and they do respond to widespread buyer concern. Recent revisions to simplify the much maligned iDrive mechanism are one good example.
While the Concept CS is not exactly a total repudiation of the current styling direction, it does incorporate design elements that were widely praised before Bangle was cut loose and allowed to do his own thing. Compare if you will the CS to the 1 series cabriolet, pictures of which have also posted on this forum.
The CS has a tautness of body not evident in the 1 series. The CS bodywork looks as if a sheet of cling wrap has been stretched over the chassis. It has muscle tone and its posture is reminiscent of an athlete ready to launch off the starting blocks. The car is long, wide and low - classic grand tourer proportions. The car has an aggressive visage, less anthropomorphic in interpretation when compared to current BMW models.
The 1 series by comparison looks contrived, with body surfaces that seem sculpted with a butter knife. The flattish side panels accentuate the vertical proportions of the car. The headlights give the car a startled expression not becoming of an ultimate driving machine. The tail lights look worse – ill-resolved and wrapped into an unconvincing “L” shape around the rear corners of the car. No wonder Singaporeans and buyers elsewhere have not exactly embraced this car with open arms.
Rumour has it that the next generation of the 3 series will benefit from the styling themes shown in the CS. I can hardly wait if this is the case.
