Could anyone tell which car is a better bet in terms of comfortibility and performance?
Is the 6 cyclinder in line engine better or a V6 VVTI better?

Re: BMW 5.23I VS Lexus GS 300

comfort: Lexus (quiet and ride is great)
Performance: Lexus (torque)

whose engine better in which aspect?

complexity: GS300 > 523
refinement of engine: 523 > GS300 (high rpm only can notice)
performance: obvious GS300>523
torque/ pulling power: obvious GS300>523
reliability: err... lexus don't break one .... neber...
roadtax: obvious GS300>523

Re: BMW 5.23I VS Lexus GS 300

LOL...this type of questions have been asked so many times before. Best is test drive n decide yrself.

On forums like this it draws a lot of fanboys, car salesman in disguise as owners of these cars, etc.

All I can say is if BMW sell the 530i at GS300's price, I will grab one. There is so much price disparity between them and each time they are compared, the usual points are debated.

I will buy a car based on my driving style and find a car that matches that. Mind you I sat in friend's GS300 before. I felt super quiet and I like it as a passenger, not sure if I will get bored quickly if I was the daily driver. Its me only, and the only thing I didnt quite like is its shape resembling the Nissan cefiro somehow from some angles. Like the Hifi in it though.

I am currently driving the GS300 on weekends. ABD is right to say that the car is SUPER QUIET and the Mark Levinson hifi system is excellent. I pretty much like the look from the front of the car but not the back.

But I have to agree that it is great if you are a passenger. As the driver, I now find it a bit too relaxing to drive and I tend to fall asleep at the wheel...not terribly exciting is the drive experience IMHO.

At the end of the day, I think it is a good family car as your family members will definitely appreciate the comfort.

Oh one more thing, after experiencing the after sales service of PML and C&C, I think the Lexus customer service level is much better.

Cheers!

Re: BMW 5.23I VS Lexus GS 300

I made the same consideration myself a month ago and eventually settled for the 523 Lci.

Test driven both and found GS300 was a tad too boring for my liking...but don't get me wrong, its a really good car in terms of both comfort and performance - probably a shade better than the 523i but then again, its 3 litre vs 2.5 litre...not really fair comparison.

If u put a gun to my head for a primary reason, I would put it down to the looks department. It was what won me over to the 523i...also thought GS300's rear resembled that of the Cefiro.
So for me, 523i it is.... sheer driving pleasure !

Re: BMW 5.23I VS Lexus GS 300

It depends how you rate the performance, striaght line driving or ability to handle turns, braking etc. in that dept I find the 5 series much better than the lexus.

Comfort = Lexus

If you equate performance to total power, specific power, power-to-weight ratio, straight-line acceleration and speed then its (still) the Lexus.

But then, you should not compare the 2 cars based on price alone, cos the 523i is no fight for the GS300.

You will need to compare the 530i with the GS300.

Re: BMW 5.23I VS Lexus GS 300

I had never seriously considered the GS 300, so didn't test drive it until after I had got my 523. Have to say it is super quiet and smooth.

To me, the main drawbacks of the GS 300 compared to the 523 are:
- driving experience not as involving
- rear central hump is even higher
- OMV only $30+K
- lower resale value
- indicator stalk sounds exactly like the Corolla's, unlike Bimmers which have a damped sound. Try it - I found it strangely unrefined compared to the rest of the cabin and unbefitting a luxury car.

No offence to anyone driving the GS 300. It's a good car overall, and I rate it a very close second to the 5 series.

Re: BMW 5.23I VS Lexus GS 300

them's good points, sjlim. Another drawback on the indicator, a partial contact doesn't give a 3 flashes then stop like the BMW's ....

Esp the resale value points, they are good points. Though the Lex, it has so totally no issues that one may consider keeping it for a decade though.

Re: BMW 5.23I VS Lexus GS 300

I was caught in between the 2. But after much consideration I bet on the BM and have no regrets.
Reason being..
1)It will have a better resale value,if you will to sell it in the open market.
2)A car with a longer history and tradition for manufacturing premium car .
3)If you have one car , a BMW or Mercedes ,is always the choice .
However if you have 2 premium cars, the 2nd.car that you can consider is Lexus.
I hope it helps.

Re: BMW 5.23I VS Lexus GS 300

Congrats on yr good choice!

Re: BMW 5.23I VS Lexus GS 300

On paper Lexus a better choice, slightly cheaper with a 3 litre engine, I've tested drive the car can't fault the car but BMW 5 series handling is better with more characteristic.

Re: BMW 5.23I VS Lexus GS 300

If one wants handling why not a BMW 335 sedan???? Or a C-Class? Or, a 911 2nd hand? Or an Evo? STI?

Why must a 1.8 ton car with full luxury features be optimized for handling and not comfort?

If I buy a 1.8 ton car it better be the most comfortable one in its class.... 1.8 tons of insulation etc....better be a spa on wheels.

Perhaps because the BMW 5 series is about the only 1.8ton car that doesn't feel like one when you drive it.

Re: BMW 5.23I VS Lexus GS 300

I think went people grow older they may want more space, comfort, power and handling. The 5 series (1.6 ton) is all rounder car...oops and brand too...I guess.
